Do Something During the week ahead, turn your learning into doing.
Rehearse your significant little moments within just the past week or two, both successes and failures. For the successes, determine why you were able to behave lovingly—what was in your heart at the time? Identify some specific, practical things you can do to nurture that heart, and set yourself reminders on a card or on your phone to help you stay prepared for little moments. For the failures, identify the god that you were worshiping at the time. Is there a common god—your agenda, personal time, pet peeve? Identify some specific, practical steps you can take to dethrone the little gods in your heart. As above, set yourself reminders on a card or on your phone. Search Me, O God For introspection during the coming week. Have I behaved badly in little moments—or big moments—for which I need to apologize to my spouse? Have I been thankless for all the things that they do “in the background” to keep our family running well? How can I thank them now, in a sincere and meaningful way? What are my heart issues that cause me routinely to be rude or oblivious? What are some Scripture passages I can call to mind to help me cooperate with the Spirit’s sanctifying work? Want to Know More? The Song of Solomon (aka Song of Songs, and Canticles in the Anglican lectionary) is a biblical enigma. While calling it an allegory of Christ and his Church would be easy, it would not be correct— both Christian and Jewish literary scholars now regard it as love poetry, pure if not simple. And as God in his providence has caused it to be included in the canon, therefore it ought to be read. Many Christians have given this book a once-over at some point but have not often returned to it. But as our topic in this series is God’s Word about marriage, now is the perfect time to read it.
