Raising The Bar On Representation!

As an organization, PCOA has made a steadfast commitment to support the LGBTQI+ community by making visible the unique needs of serving older adults whose experiences have long been excluded from traditional care services. While the challenges can be daunting, we are energized by the partners we get to work with every day who are committed to making strides towards building an inclusive society.

August is Make a Will Month! With a legal will, you can approach the future with peace of mind by having a plan that communicates your wishes, provides for your loved ones, and sustains the causes you believe in. We’ve partnered with FreeWill to make it easier than ever to start your will and make your most important plan for the future. Estate planning is an essential life task that everyone should have access to, yet nearly 67% of American adults don’t have an up-to-date plan. We want to support our entire PCOA community in completing this milestone and highlight FreeWill as a trusted place to start the process. Last August, over 70,000 people used this online estate planning tool from FreeWill to create their plans and even support the causes they love. Join them and use this month as an opportunity to check this important item off your to-do list. While creating your will, you can choose to include a planned gift to PCOA. This optional gift costs nothing today and builds a legacy that sustains the support we provide for older adults for decades to come. Start your legacy and create your free will today! Most recently, we were selected to receive an additional $10,000 from LGBTQ+ Alliance Fund, a project of the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona, to expand our Visibility Matters trainings. This suite of curriculum deepens discussions on critical topics like bias and minority stress, including additional modules on dementia and trans-affirming housing. Trainings include information often left out of diversity trainings, such as

specific vulnerabilities of LGBTQI+ older people as it relates to end-of-life planning, palliative care, hospice care, and memory care. Through this grant, along with additional funding from the Kellenberger & Tollefson Center for LGBTQ Philanthropy, we will be able to develop a more comprehensive training and culture change for organizations taking part in this program.
