2.2. Challenges in Data Management Data management remains a central challenge for digital transformation. Legacy systems, inconsistent data integration, and poor data quality have been identified as major barriers [5]. These issues limit companies’ ability to leverage real-time data for decision- making and process optimisation. Addressing data quality and system interoperability is essential for successful transformation initiatives. 2.3. Sustainability Trends and Digitalisation Digitalisation has emerged as a key enabler for achieving sustainability goals in industrial contexts [6]. Technologies such as IoT, data analytics, and predictive maintenance allow companies to reduce energy consumption, monitor emissions, and minimise resource waste. In the paper industry, where resource efficiency and emission reduction are critical, integrating digital tools aligns operational goals with environmental sustainability. 3. Motivation The motivation for this study arises from the increasing recognition that digital trans- formation is essential to secure the long-term success and sustainability of the paper indus- try. With industries worldwide leveraging digital technologies to enhance productivity, reduce costs, and improve operational efficiency, the paper industry must likewise adapt to remain competitive. This study aligns with the broader mission of ZELLCHEMING’s technical committee, DATA [1], which seeks to advance the digital maturity of the paper sector through practical insights and actionable strategies. Sustainability has become a central challenge for the paper industry [6]. Growing environmental awareness and increasing regulatory pressures require companies to reduce their carbon footprint, optimise resource usage, and minimise waste [5]. Digitalisation plays a pivotal role in achieving these goals by enabling advanced monitoring, process optimisation, and the development of sustainable practices. Through the integration of technologies such as data analytics and real-time monitoring, companies can enhance process efficiency, reduce emissions, and create environmentally friendly solutions. Despite these clear benefits, the path to digital transformation in the paper industry is not without challenges. Companies face sector-specific barriers, including legacy systems, resistance to change, and inconsistent levels of digital maturity. Overcoming these obstacles requires a clear understanding of the current state of digitalisation along with a roadmap for improvement. The primary aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive and industry-specific overview of the digitalisation status within the paper industry. By conducting a targeted survey of key stakeholders at the ZELLCHEMING Expo 2024, the study uncovers insights into the industry’s digital readiness, common challenges, and areas for improvement. While individual companies must understand their own digital maturity to implement targeted measures, an industry-wide perspective offers valuable benchmarks. By comparing these findings with digitalisation trends in other manufacturing sectors, this study identifies best practices and innovative solutions that the paper industry can adopt to advance its digital capabilities. Ultimately, this study seeks to equip industry leaders with the knowledge and strate- gies needed to navigate the complexities of digital transformation. By understanding the current status, identifying barriers, and offering actionable recommendations, the paper industry can position itself for a more sustainable, efficient, and technologically advanced future. This work serves as a key resource for stakeholders striving to enhance digital ma- turity and ensure long-term competitiveness in an increasingly digital and environmentally conscious world.
