4. The Industrie 4.0 Maturity Index The Industrie 4.0 Maturity Index from acatech (the German National Academy of Science and Engineering) is a comprehensive framework designed to help companies assess their level of digital maturity and develop a roadmap for digital transformation. The index provides a structured approach to evaluate and enhance the digital capabilities of organisations, particularly within the context of Industrie 4.0. [7] 4.1. Overview of the Industrie 4.0 Maturity Index The Industrie 4.0 Maturity Index outlines six stages of digital transformation, offer- ing a structured approach for companies to evaluate their digital maturity and plan for improvements. It is based on the understanding that digital transformation involves not just the implementation of new technologies but also changes in processes, organisational structures, and corporate culture (see Figure 1). It outlines six stages of maturity that organisations typically progress through on their journey towards full digital integration:

4.1.1. Computerisation At this foundational stage, companies introduce basic IT systems to replace manual or paper-based methods. The focus is on improving efficiency through digital tools such as ERP systems that support data collection and workflow management. The foundational stage is characterised by the implementation of basic computer systems to streamline operational processes. During this stage, companies focus on in- troducing IT systems that support daily operations and facilitate data collection. This transition from manual or paper-based methods to digital solutions aims to enhance effi- ciency and accuracy in data management. By deploying enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and other essential IT infrastructure, companies create a digital foundation that enables more advanced technological integration and process optimisation in the future. This stage sets the groundwork for improved workflow management and provides the initial digital framework necessary for subsequent stages of digital maturity. 4.1.2. Connectivity In this stage, individual systems are interconnected to enable seamless data flow across departments. Integration of systems such as ERP and CRM eliminates data silos, allowing for enhanced communication and operational coordination.
