Many people in the companies surveyed work with data on a daily basis, and it is generally available and not scattered across different departments. Awareness of data’s relevance is high, making it a crucial resource for decision-making and achieving strategic goals. However, most interviewees face challenges with poor data quality, such as incorrect or missing entries. Fortunately, nearly all interviewees reported having a designated contact person for data and its correction, although only four have processes for improving data quality. Ensuring data quality at some companies is linked to the responsibility of the person entering or responsible for the data. Additionally, no data-based decisions are made without human input, and there are isolated lighthouse projects but no consistent digitalisation efforts. 8. Comparisons with Other Industries The Industrie 4.0 Maturity Center https://www.i40mc.de/en/ (accessed on 6 Decem- ber 2024) in Aachen has conducted 70 studies on companies using the Maturity Index, revealing that most have achieved maturity stage 3 Visibility, in the areas of culture and organisational structure (see Figure 19. This stage involves regular consultation of near-real- time data to inform operational decisions and a philosophy of continuous improvement, often supported by lean management practices. However, progress is slower in resources and information systems, where companies primarily work with digital data and docu- ments but have not yet achieved near real-time data aggregation and visualisation, which is also at maturity stage 3.
