Jan. 11, 1953 I PROMISE—TO PRAY AND READ THE BIBLE 1 Chron. 4:10; 16:11; Matt. 7:7; Luke 18:9-14 These verses do not teach anything directly concerning Bible study, but cer tainly Bible study is involved in proper praying. The Word of God tells us how to pray and what things to pray for. A study of the Word before going to prayer prepares our heart for the holy busi ness of prayer. Read through the texts given above and note the following truths they suggest: What To Pray For 1 Chron. 4:10 This text records the fine prayer of Jabez, an “ honorable” man. There are probably many other prayers in the Bible that might teach better what things the Christian should pray for (see Matt. 6:9-13;l Tim. 2:1, 2, etc.), but Jabez’ prayer is an example of ac ceptable prayer. Jabez prayed for God’s blessing: “ Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed.” Jabez may not have been thinking only of material blessing but of the best of God’s blessings, namely, spiritual bless ings (Eph. 1:3; 1 Peter 1:3-5). The wise man will put first things first and will pray that his life may be in the center of God’s will in order that he might be of use to the Saviour. Other blessings will then follow as God chooses (Matt. 6:33). In the second place Jabez prayed that God would enlarge his coast (1 Chron. 4:10). By this he meant that God would increase his property, give him more land. This, too, is a legitimate prayer. God is interested in the prosperity of His people (Psa. 1:3). James tells us that believers have not because they ask not (James 4 :2). Material prosperity is not always a sign of the favor of God upon our lives but it can be! I like to think of this part of Jabez’s prayer, however, in a spiritual sense. It seems to me that the Christian ought to pray for a wider understanding of the love of Christ (Eph. 3:18, 19), and for a fuller knowledge of the will of God (Eph. 3:17), and for the borders of his usefulness to be enlarged (2 Peter 1:5-10). Again, Jabez prayed for the ever present hand of God upon him. This is a wonderful prayer. Without the guid ing hand of God we go astray; without the restraining hand of God we plunge into sin; without the strong hand of God upon us we are weak; without the om nipotent hand of God upon us we fall; without the prodding hand of God upon us we linger. Let us pray for God’s hand to be upon us. Jabez prayed that God would keep him from evil. A wonderful prayer this! Our Lord thus taught us to pray (Matt. 6:13). The Christian ought to fear sin and hate sin and run from sin as he runs from the devil. Jabez knew that sin may not grieve me.” Another transla-
