of Life, and He alone holds the keys of Life and Death (Rev. 1:18; John 10:28, 29). Nor were these words given to Peter only, but to all the Apostles (Cf. Matt. 18:18). What then did our Lord mean? Note that He speaks of the “ kingdom of heav en” (v. 19). This term refers to the visible Church or temporal organization on earth. We know this is so from the teaching of Matthew 13 which ought to be studied in this connection. The refer ence then is to the exercise of authority in the visible Church; but this authority must be in accordance with the Word of God, or it could not be ratified in Heav en. We must remember, also, that this authority was given only to the Apostles through whom came the inspired teach ing regarding the doctrines and the dis cipline of the Church. Christ is stating here that the teaching of the Apostles would be inspired teaching and would be binding both on earth and in Heaven. Thus He sets His seal of approval on the body of revealed truth incorporated in the New Testament. This does not in clude the teachings of men or the tradi tions of the Church which are without Apostolic authority. Subsequent Church leaders have the power to bind (forbid) whatever is for bidden in the Word of God, and they have the authority to loose (permit) whatever is permitted in the Word of God. Beyond this no man dares go. How important, then, that churches and church leaders know the Bible thorough ly in order that they might exercise their true power but no more than their true power!
