“many” of Calvary symbolized the “in numerable” of heaven. They who are not Christ’s shall rise out of their graves; but it will not be because of the blood that saveth. ' “They shall come forth,” said Jesus, “unto the resurrection of damna tion.” Instead of its being their rising from the regions of the dead, it will be their plunge into “the second death.” Only the saints of God shall come forth “unto the resurrection of life.” None but saints; and yet every saint; for he that believeth on Jesus is a saint, and he that believeth on Him hath everlasting life, and shall never come into comdemnation. — W il l ia m R . N ic h o l s o n . “Enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut the door, pray” (Matt. 6:6). Christ longed greatly that His disciples should know God as their Father, and that they should have secret fellowship with Him. In His own life, He found it not only indispensable, but the highest happi ness, to meet the Father in secret. And He would have us realize that it is impossible to be true, whole-hearted disciples without daily intercourse with the Father in heaven, who waits for us in secret. God would draw us away from the world and ourselves. He olfers us, instead, the bles sedness of close, intimate communion with Himself. Oh, that God’s children would understand this! Old Testament believers enjoyed this experience. We read: “Ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” If wë really believe this, we shall have the joyful assurance that our life,' hid with Christ in God, in such divine keeping is safe-and beyond the reach of every foe. We should day by day con stantly seek the renewal of our spiritual life in prayer to our Father who is in secret. Because we are dead with Christ— because we are one plant with Him in the likeness of His death and of His resurrec tion, we know that, as the roots of a tree are hidden under the earth, so the roots of our daily life are hidden deep in God. — A n d r ew M u rr a y . The believer should be familiar in the house over which Christ is set, and draw near with full assurance of faith. Come and tell Him all your wants and desires freely, without concealing anything from Him, for that would argue distance and distrust. The stronger faith is, the more wants it tells, and the more fully it tells them. Do you want anything of which you cannot tell your Lord ? It argues either no real need, or else little faith. Strong faith hath free communion with heaven, and conceals nothing. — T h o m a s B o sto n . Sing a hymn to Jesus, when the heart is faint; Tell it all to Jesus, comfort or complaint: If the work is sorrow, if the way is long, If thou dread’st the morrow, tell it Him in song: Though thy heart be aching for the crown and palm, Keep thy spirit waking with a faithful psalm. e BS-E. MARCH 30 O u r S t a n d in g i n C h r is t “Justified freely by his grace” (Rom. 3: 24). Our standing in Christ is not a stopping place, but a starting point. It is a place of rest; indeed we can have no rest until we apprehend our standing in Him. It is such a place of rest that we are described as “made to sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” This rest is given us, however, not that we may sleep,- but that we may “arise and walk.” It is the starting point in a path of illimitable progress, the commencement of a life of infinite attain ment. There are no steps to be taken to reach this blessed standing, this quiet resting place. There are innumerable steps in the upward life which begins there. God will not let us take any steps to get to Him. “Neither shalt thou go up by steps to mine altar.” No effort is needed to get to God. God comes down in Christ to our level—to the very lowest place, “the place of a skull,” the side of a dying thief. He comes all the way to the very lowest and worst, and meets us where we are and just as we are. He comes down to the “dust and ashes,” to the “horrible pit,” even to the “miry clay,” at the very bottom, and brings us up, putting His own mighty arm underneath us, bidding us “only trust Him.” The sinner need only trust in a present Saviour.—S. A. B lackw ood . MARCH 31 A T im e for O bed ien c e “We have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing” (Lk. 5:5). You say you have been disappointed. You have toiled all night and have caught nothing. Go on to say: “Nevertheless at thy word, I will let down the net.” Let it down now. Whatever be your trouble or the difficulties of your position—whether it be that your money runs short, or what ever it be—let down your net into the deep. Cod has a marvelous purse of money. Even the fishes in the sea are His purse. He has only to open the fish’s mouth, and there is money enough there to pay the taxes. God has many a good purse there for you; let down the net; you shall get all you need. “My God shall supply all your need.” It comes from our God; we care not where else it comes from. He clothes us. He educates us Himself. He does not send us away to school; He keeps us at home. He feeds us every day. He has been feeding us all these years. Thank God, there is good food on His table. In our Father’s house there is bread enough and to spare. And what more ? What next? “Go forward.” Let us go forward in the name of the Lord. He can renew us day by day. How unreasonable and cow ardly a thing is unbelief!—C. A. Fox. APRIL 1 P a in f u l R e tra cin g “Go, return on thy way” (1 Ki. 19:15). It is not pleasant to be put back. Fail ure and mistake are humbling. Elijah had both. He had failed in his lesson and had taken a wrong course. So God sent him back: “Go, return on thy way,” was the divine command. It was so with Abraham, when of his own mind and will, he went down into Egypt. After certain unwelcome and unhappy experiences, he had to retrace his steps. It was so, too, with Jonah, when he failed in his lesson of obedience, and, instead of going to Nineveh, fled to Joppa and took ship for Tarshish. It was so also
