before there could be the descent o f the Holy Spirit. (3) Two witnesses in white bare record o f His return. (4) The tidings were to be told from the center (Jerusalem) to the circumfer­ ence (the uttermost part o f the earth). (5 ) A cloud received Him and a cloud shall reveal Him (Rev. 1:7). (6) Nothing less than the same Man could ever satisfy a saved man. (7) The times are in His hands, but the tidings are in ours. (8) The power o f the Holy Spirit is _the promised possession o f every believer who wills it. (9) The proofs o f Christ’s resurrection were and are plentiful and patent.

Who were the two witnesses who stood by? John 20:12. What had the Lord promised? John 14:3; How will He be known ? Rev. 1 :7. Will His feet stand in the same place when He returns ? Zech. 14:4. What will be the effect o f His coming? First-—to the Church? 1 Thess. 1:10; 4:14-17. Second—to Israel? Acts 15:14-17; Luke 1:30-33. Third—to the nations ? Daniel 2 :34, 35; Isa. 2:2-4. PRACTICAL POINTS (1) The faith o f the believer was fortified by forty days o f proof. (2 ) There must be the ascent o f the Lord

v. 1. “And when the day of Pentecost was now come, (rather, was being fulfilled ) they were, all together in one place.” For ten days the Apostles and their companions had continued steadfastly in prayer. Pre­ sumably much o f their prayer was for the fulfillment o f the promise o f the Father,

the baptism in the Holy Spirit (cf. Luke 11:13; Acts 4:31; 8:15-17). They did not regard the positive promise o f Christ (ch. 1 :5) as relieving them from the neces­ sity oF prayer, but rather as an incentive to and foundation for prayer. The prom­ ises o f God are never intepded to relieve
