‘A’ IS FOR ATHLETICS HOW MY KIDS BALANCE SCHOOL AND SPORTS

Cornerstone PT Patients

ugust is a quiet month for the DeLaFuentes. Well, I should say quieter. Most months are pretty manic as we

juggle our children’s activities. Thanks to her private training, August is our daughter’s only month without softball, so we enjoy a small reprieve before school begins. Things are particularly crazy for her when school is in session. There are days where she gets home from school at 2:50, gets picked up at 3 to catch pitches for a teammate, practices more, eats dinner, does schoolwork, and then goes to bed around 10. It sounds like a lot, but she loves it. People sometimes ask, “Do the sports reflect on your kids’ report cards?” But it isn’t a problem for them, which is wonderful because it means they’re learning the lessons I hoped they would when I got them started in athletics. “As a coach, I see the kids progress in more ways than athletics, so youth sports definitely have my glowing endorsement.” You see, sports to me has never been about winning. It’s about acquiring valuable character traits, like discipline, teamwork, and lifelong learning. My children love their sports, but the discipline and ambition they learn by competing actually helps them with their schoolwork. We told our kids if the grades drop, we’ll cut out whatever it takes to get them back up; but last year, they earned their best grades yet. For instance, our 12-year-old daughter has developed time management skills that help her maximize her days. She spends nights before bed and downtime on

Our son is 9 years old, so his coursework isn’t quite as demanding. Still, if his sports affected his schoolwork, we’d know about it. As an energetic kid, I can see how autumn afternoons filled with flag football and lacrosse tournaments could be more engaging than class. But he gets great reports from his teachers and seems to actually look forward to class. It probably sounds like I’m bragging about my kids, and maybe I am. They deserve a lot of praise for the way they can be so active and maintain balance. But mostly, I think it’s a testament to what sports can do for young people. As a coach, I see the kids progress in more ways than athletics, so youth sports definitely have my glowing endorsement. The August reprieve usually includes an overnight trip to the shore, where we stay with close friends. It’s a last hurrah we do every year to tie up the summer season. The kids always have a great time in the sun during the day, and they have a blast at night when the “foam dance party” breaks out. It’s great to see them let loose and have fun at the beach, and they deserve it.

“Before PT, I was afraid to move my neck. Certain movements, like looking down, reaching up, and turning my neck, were certain to cause pain. After several months here, my neck feels strong, and I am not fearful of moving my neck. I know that I can turn and stretch much further than I could before PT. I will continue my exercises at home.”

“Dave and his entire staff are amazing! I started therapy

with pain, decreased range of motion, and decreased strength. After completion, I am back to normal and able to perform all activities. I highly recommend Cornerstone Physical Therapy!”

Are your kids already sweating exams this semester? Fear not! Combine these tips with a regular studying routine and they’ll be set for anything their teachers assign this year.

Chew On This

Not all classrooms allow gum, but those that do offer students a distinct advantage. According to Scientific American, chewing gum increases the flow of oxygen to the areas of your brain responsible for attention and memory. Your student can even coordinate gum flavors with each of their classes. Do they have a biolog y test coming up? Encourage your student to chew peppermint gum while they study and while they take the test. Their brain will associate the minty flavor with those plant cell organelles they studied for an hour the night before. Is your child trying to perfect an essay before a midnight deadline? Be sure they leave time to read their essay aloud! Tom Stafford, a psychologist who studies typos at the University of Sheffield, notes that when we reread our work, “we don’t catch every detail; we’re not like computers or NSA databases.” Your student doesn’t catch their typos because they don’t expect them. By reading their work aloud, your student can fix those typos as they come up. But why put in all the effort when they can let Google do it for them? They can simply copy and paste the essay into Google Translate and let it read the essay aloud. Hearing their work ring out in Google’s monotone speech will help them highlight and fix those mistakes. Is your child wasting all of their precious studying hours on social media? According to Common Sense Media’s 2015 national census survey, tweens and teens spend an average of six to nine hours on some form of media daily. Help your student learn to self-regulate with StayFocusd, a web extension available for free in the Chrome Web Store. By adding this extension to your web browser, you can limit the amount of time your child spends scrolling through Facebook and maximize the time they spend on Google Scholar and Quizlet. 3 ITEMS TO BOOST IMMUNITY

s summer winds down, the weather becomes more unpredictable. Cold fronts? Torrential rain? Snow in October? If you’ve lived in New Jersey, you’ve seen it all. These transitional periods are some of the most vulnerable times for our bodies, as they become more susceptible to colds and flus.

A

The best place to prepare your body for sick season is in the kitchen. These items can boost your immune system. And, even better, they’re easy to incorporate into your meals.

Lemon. This fruit aids in digestion and nausea, helps detox the body, and is an anti- inflammatory. It’s also an easy and delicious way to get vitamin C. There is chatter in the health community about the possible effects lemon has on cancer treatment and prevention, but scientists are seeking stronger proof. Ginger. This easy spice also aids in digestion and boosts your immunity. But it goes further than that by alkalizing the body, burning fat, and helping with kidney health. Adding it to your morning tea is a great way to cleanse the body and wake yourself up. Garlic . This is for the crowd that values savory over sweet. This spice fights bacteria, is anti-fungal and anti-septic, and even helps heal the bumps or scrapes you’ve accrued over the summer at a more rapid rate. If you’re preparing any kind of meat or potatoes, garlic is an effortless addition to the dish.

Here’s to good food and even better health!

View of a Lifetime

VIEW OF A LIFETIME WHERE TO WATCH THE GREAT AMERICAN ECLIPSE

On August 21, 2017, the greatest show of the summer will take place in the United States: a total solar eclipse! This eclipse will be visible across North America, but the path of totality — the area where the moon completely covers the sun — will only fall in the continental U.S., leading this cosmic event to be called the Great American Eclipse.

If you’re already in the United States, a day’s road trip is all you need to grab a front row seat for this rare astronomical occurrence.

COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA

Need a place to watch the eclipse in the southern U.S.? Then get yourself to South Carolina, where the state capital of Columbia is almost right in the middle of the path of totality. Plenty of hotels make Columbia a great viewing location for those who don’t want to camp out, and the vibrant city life means you’ll have a lot to do even when the eclipse is over.

THE MUSEUM OF IDAHO, IDAHO FALLS, IDAHO

The Museum of Idaho has been designated an Official NASA Observation Site, and the museum is hosting four days of awesome events to celebrate. Enjoy live presentations, technology demonstrations, and special exhibits as you prepare to watch the total eclipse with NASA scientists.

SANDHILLS, NORTH PLATTE, NEBRASKA

In the heartlands, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more perfect viewing location than the Sandhills of western Nebraska. With wide-open skies, low rolling hills, and no towering buildings to get in the way, the Sandhills are sure to be a popular viewing spot.

Visit the official website of the Great American Eclipse at greatamericaneclipse.com for everything you need to know about this once-in-a-lifetime sight!
