Alaska Miner Journal, February 2026

THE ALASKA MINER JOURNAL: The publication is member-only news mailed to AMA members, eight times a year, in months when the Magazine is not published. The Alaska Miner Journal is dedicated to those who work in and support the mining industry in Alaska, its commitment to the people, and the resources of our state. Our goal is to disseminate information on responsible mineral development, educating the public about the value of mining, providing information for our membership and the general public, and providing policymakers the information they need to understand the mining industry and monitor political and regulatory processes affecting mining in Alaska.

A Message from the Executive Director

It never gets old saying thank you to our amazing members, sponsors and partner organizations. Each of you has a huge impact on the success of AMA and the Alaska mining industry, so I'll say it again ... thank you! Your support is invaluable in helping tell our story at home and abroad, and we couldn't do what we do at AMA without you. We've been traveling a lot recently, including to a number of outstanding events. Alaska Night at Roundup is one and is among the highlights of the year. Alaska Night was again well-attended and it's always a time for many to catch up. See photos from the event starting on Page 8. I would be remiss to not again offer a resounding thank you to those who sponsored Alaska Night. You can see the full list on Page 8-9. Soon we also will have our fourth annual Juneau Mining Forum, which is always enlightening on many fronts. There are many notable speakers planned to discuss a number of important topics surrounding Alaska mining. I would like to invite you for what continues to be an engaging discussion each year. See more about the Forum on Page 6. Looking ahead to April, we're excited to again have our Faribanks Convention and Trade Show on April 6-10. The Committee has been hard at work to again make this a fantastic event ... as it always is. If you haven't taken advantage of trip discounts yet, you can find a full list on Page 4, as well as the event sponsor listings on Page 5 (again, another big thank you!). On Pages 16-19, you will find AMA's annual state and federal Issues on Concern. If you haven't seen them yet, I would urge you to read them over to familiarize yourself on the challeges Alaska's miners currently face. On the communications front, AMA continues to host our statewide Zoom calls every other Friday (full schedule of events on Page 34) and our branches are meeting in person, too. These meetups provide an opportunity for each of us to share insights about what we’re working on, what’s going right and what we can improve on for the good of our mining industry. I encourage you to invite friends to our Zoom calls so they can see all the exceptional things that are being done here in Alaska, at the federal level and even globally. Many branches are meeting locally as well; you can always find good conversation about various topics at these. AMA also is working on our 2026 Alaska Miners Handbook and Service Directory, which will be out soon. We can’t wait to share this edition of the Bible of Alaska mining with all of you! Looking ahead to the rest of a busy 2026, things are looking bright for Alaska’s miners with support in Washington and abroad for the valuable roles we all play. Thanks for all that you do to be involved, whether it is sponsor, speak, help plan, attend ... anything. Together, I know we are doing an amazing job sharing the value of our industry.

This is the official journal of the Alaska Miners Association, published eight times a year exclusively to our members. It is published in partnership with the Alaska Miners Association by Fireweed Strategies LLC, 4849 Potter Crest Circle, Anchorage, AK 99516.

We actively seek contributions from our members and the mining industry. Please email

‘Zoom’ Earns Coach of the Year Honors BY DAVE "ZOOM" SZUMIGALA

We have had more than 100 kids in the 6U program for many years, and this year (2025-2026) we have more than 120 kids. I have so much fun teaching little kids how to skate and the basics of hockey. The 6U hockey program is also the development program for many of our youth hockey coaches. While we are coaching the youngest players in our hockey community, we experienced coaches are also teaching the fundamentals of coaching to our rookie coaches. It is satisfying to see coaches that I worked with at this age group con- tinue coaching at most age levels in Fairbanks. I was honored to be the HCF Coach of the Year for the 2019- 2020 season. It’s humbling to be recognized in that manner because there are so many great coaches in Fairbanks. I really believe in teaching every kid at every skill level how to play

I I grew up near Toledo, Ohio. We had a creek through the back- yard, which we dammed in the autumn so that it would flood the yard and freeze to form a rink. There was also a pond across the street at the public park. So, I had plenty of places to skate and play pond hockey, but I never played organized hockey as a kid. The first indoor ice that I ever skated on was at the Patty Ice Arena. I find it ironic that I came to the coldest place that I have ever lived, only to skate indoors. I played several years of intramurals at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and learned a bunch of hockey skills from some of the guys on my Nerland Hall dorm team. Like a lot of youth hockey coaches, I started coaching because my

Most people know me now as the coach for the HCF 6U program. I have been coaching 4-, 5- and 6-year-olds for the past decade, mostly with Mike Steffey as head coach of the program. When Mike left Fairbanks in 2024, I took over that role. Mike Steffey shared his thoughts: “I had the pleasure of coaching with Coach Zoom for 20 years. While developing hockey skills is always at the forefront for Zoom, the thing that I appreciate the most is his desire to help the players grow and develop as people. Dave is always there with a smile to listen and help in any way he can. I am grateful to have coached with Zoom, but even more honored to call him my friend. Congratulations, coach.”

kids wanted to play hockey. After starting as an assistant coach with the Arctic Lions at 8U Minor, my boys and I made the switch to the Fairbanks Amateur Hockey Asso- ciation (FAHA). I was a coach with FAHA until they merged into Hockey Club Fairbanks (HCF). I am still cur- rently coaching with HCF, as well as serving as the HCF vice president, SafeSport coordinator and Disci- plinary Committee chairman. I’ve been coaching young people in hockey and other sports for more than 20 years in Fairbanks. I’ve coached most levels of youth hockey. Coaching at those varied levels and ages allowed me the opportunity to learn from so many great coaches and interact with so many wonderful young people in our community.

hockey. Hockey is a game for life and there are opportunities to play hockey at any age as long as one has the passion to participate.

Dave Szumigala was honored as Coach of the Year in January during the annual ceremony of the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame.

Pogo Mine Yields 270K Ounces of Gold in '25 BY SHANE LASLEY

N orthern Star Resources Ltd. reported in late January that its Pogo mine produced 52,832 ounces of gold during the final three months of 2025, marking the second straight quarter of fall- ing gold output at this high-grade underground operation about 85 miles southeast of Fairbanks. Pogo started 2025 at a blistering pace — producing 155,855 ounces of gold over the first six months, including a whopping 84,339 ounces during the second quarter. Output from the Australian mining company's Alaska operation, howev- er, faded during the second quarter. During the third quarter of the calen- dar year (the first quarter of Northern Star's fiscal year 2026), Pogo pro- duced 65,208 ounces of gold, a 23%

drop from the 84,339 oz produced during the previous three-month period. The company attributed the drop in production primarily to lower gold grades, a trend that continued into the fourth quarter. The average grade of ore fed into the Pogo mill over the final three months of 2025 was 5.5 grams per metric ton gold, a more than 15% drop from the previous quarter and 30% less than the overall reserve grades at the mine. The company says a combina- tion of dilution and ore loss contrib- uted to the drop in ore grades. "While mined grades were impacted by the introduction of new mining areas and higher dilution rates, grades improved towards the end of the quarter as improvement ini- tiatives took effect," Northern Star stated in its quarterly report.

Northern Star COO Simon Jessop informed investors and analysts that the improved mill feed grades have continued into the new year. On the mine development front, Northern Star reports that it com- pleted the two portals during the fourth quarter that will provide access to the more than 1.1-mil- lion-ounce Goodpaster gold deposit about a mile northwest of the cur- rent mining area at Pogo. On its way to Goodpaster, the new underground workings will pass through Central Lodes, a depos- it immediately north of the Liese Vein system currently being mined, and Central Links, a discovery area between Central Lodes and Goodpaster.

Donlin Gold: Fluor Corp. selected to lead Bankable Feasibility Study

coming months as scope align- ment with specialist contractors is finalized. Requests for proposals for spe- cialist contractors covering major infrastructure and processing com- ponents were issued in late 2025 and will be incorporated into the BFS as selections are finalized. In parallel, Donlin Gold continues to build its owner’s project team and advance site activities that support the next phase of development. This work includes geotechnical drilling and materials assessments along the planned upriver port and access road to support detailed engineering and constructability. These efforts are being advanced concurrently to support an inte- grated BFS and position the project for the next phase following com- pletion of the study and project financing.

D onlin Gold has selected Fluor Corp. as the engineer- ing firm to lead the project’s Bankable Feasibility Study (BFS), a key step as the Donlin Gold proj- ect advances toward financing and a financial investment deci- sion (FID). The BFS is a comprehensive evalu- ation of engineering, cost, schedule and execution planning, ensuring the project is technically sound, responsibly planned with the long- term interests of communities in the Yukon-Kuskokwim region. “Launching our BFS with Fluor marks an exciting new chapter in the Donlin Gold story,” said Todd Dahlman, general manager of Donlin Gold. “We’re looking forward

to a dynamic and productive year as we lay the groundwork for a FID.” Donlin Gold is advancing the study using a disciplined, execu- tion-focused approach informed by experience delivering large, complex projects. The emphasis is on integrating engineering design, cost accuracy, construction plan- ning and schedule development to support a high-quality, invest- ment-grade study. Fluor was selected following a competitive bidding process that included multiple engineering firms. Fluor will be responsible for integrating several specialist work- streams into a coordinated project framework, including key infra- structure and processing elements

such as the power plant, natural gas pipeline, pressure oxidation cir- cuit and oxygen plant. “Fluor’s selection reflects their global leadership in engineering and their capability to manage complex, multidisciplinary proj- ects in remote locations,” said Frank Arcese, Donlin Gold Project Director. “Their expertise in front- end engineering design, integrated EPCM execution, project controls and risk management brings the rigor and precision needed at this stage of the BFS. I am confident that Fluor is the right partner at the right time to help move the project forward.” A detailed schedule and budget are expected to be shared in the

Alaska Silver Looks Into Illinois Creek Gold BY SHANE LASLEY

W ith the price of gold above $4,900 an ounce and silver nearing $100 an ounce, Alaska Silver Corp. is reeval- uating the potential surrounding the past-producing gold-silver mine on its Illinois Creek project about 300 miles west of Fairbanks. While much of Alaska Silver's explo- ration at Illinois Creek in recent years has focused on the Water- pump Creek carbonate replace- ment deposit and similar silver-rich CRD targets, the same mineralizing system produced a more gold-dom- inant deposit that was mined briefly about 30 years ago. "For the last few years, our focus has been on the Waterpump Creek Deposit, which contains some of the

highest silver grades in the world. However, the Illinois Creek deposit, which is part of the same extensive CRD system, is also a significant piece of the Project and, like Water- pump Creek, contains significant amounts of silver," said Alaska Silver CEO Kit Marrs. An open-pit mine and heap leach recovery circuit at Illinois Creek pro- duced an estimated 150,000 ounces of gold and 500,000 ounces of silver during intermittent operations starting in 1997. The $280 an ounce gold price at the time made the economics difficult, and the state of Alaska closed the mine in 2002. The early closure during a low gold price environment resulted in much of the deposit remaining unmined.

With the price of gold and silver both more than 15 times higher than when the mine was in oper- ation, Alaska Silver has updated the resource for the deposit at the past-producing mine. According to the new calculation, Illinois Creek hosts 9 million metric tons of indicated resource averaging 0.92 grams per metric ton (260,000 ounces) gold and 29.7 g/t (8.3 million ounces) silver; plus 10.9 million metric tons of inferred resource averaging 0.84 g/t (290,000 ounces) gold and 30.1 g/t (10.4 million ounces) silver. "All of the Illinois Creek resource is oxide materials, which are amena- ble to low-cost heap or vat leaching operations to recover both the gold and the silver," Marrs said.
