A ugust 31. “Open thou mine eyes.” —Psa. 119:18.:

IT is a mistake to imagine that one has only to read the Bible in order to know what is in it. The things of God are spiritually discerned, but we were born spiritually blind. Hence we need to offer the Psalmist’s prayer: “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.” We meet with illustrations of this fact every day. The Skeptic reads the Bible, but does he worship? No; he says it is a book of con tradiction, of absurdities, of idle fables. The man of intellect ual pride reads it; does he clasp it to his heart? No; he merely babbles of evidences and authorship and dates. The man of worldly wisdom peruses it; does he sit amazed as before a burn ing bush? No; from parts of it he evolves a scheme of moral or worldly maxims, the rest he treats as forgery or as idle, puerile sentimentality and folly. Anybody who has learned to spell can read the Book, but only those who have received their sight at the hands of its Author can behold the wonders that lie hidden beneath the veil of the text. If we would read the Bible aright, we must not fail to pray, with all the earnest- ttess of our nature: “Come, Holy Ghost,, for moved by Thee, The Prophets wrote and spoke; Unlock the truth, Thyself the key; Unseal the Sacred Book.” “Lord, that I may receive my sight!” Then shall I see in an ever, increasing apocalypse, the hidden glories and beauties of Thy Word. Stic. M S eptember 1. “H e will joy over thee with singing." —Zeph. 3 :17. TH ERE is something very striking, nay, even startling in this declaration of the Prophet. That the Almighty God should sing over a poor, lost, worthless sinner, seems at first sight impos sible. But this is He Who, when He hath found the lost sheep, “layeth it on his shoulders rejoicing;” this is He Who loved us with such a love unfathomable that He gave His life to be a ransom for ours.' There is one thing that we shall never learn, at least on this side the grave—the depth and tenderness o f Christ’s love for men. Truly it passeth our knowledge, it exceeds our comprehension. That He should love the loveable were not strange; we can all do that, at least to some extent; Ibut that He should pour all the wealth of His infinite affection upon the utterly unlovely! Yet so it is. Over every returning sinner He rejoices with joy unspeakable. Have we ever set the heart of God singing? Were it not worth while so to do? Why should we stay away from One Who would find such delight in our approach? If God sings with joy over the recovered prodigals, ought not we, who profess to love Him, both pray and work for their, return? Can any true Christian heart be cold and indifferent to that which is so dear to Him? Shall we not pray: “Enlarge, inflame, and fill my heart
