in the land to which He had led them. But before Gideon led the Chil dren of Israel into battle, the Lord told him that he was taking too many soldiers to war. If all of the soldiers went, the people would become proud of their great army, and would feel that they, rather than God, had won the battle. Gideon allowed every fear ful soldier to return to his home, but still there were- too many soldiers. Gideon took the remaining soldiers to some water. Some of them knelt and put their mouths down into the water to get a drink. Others, filled their hands with water, and brought them up to their mouths, so that even while they were drinking, they could keep their eyes upon their enemies. Only three hundred of these men remem bered to watch the enemy. God told Gideon to send the others home. To the three hundred, God gave victory over the Midianites, for they trusted in Him rather than in their own army. Christian boys and girls sometimes become proud and satisfied with them selves and do not feel that they need to trust in God to care for them. Those who truly love the Saviour will never feel that they can do any thing without His help; they will trust in Him at all times. Talk to your Lord each day about all of your problems, and all of your plans, rather than waiting to pray until you are having trouble. With Him as your Helper, you need never be afraid. LESSON FOR MARCH 17 Religion in Everyday Life LESSON MATERIAL: Ruth 1:8-17. GOLDEN T E X T : “ Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God” (Ruth 1:16). Outline and Exposition I. T h e T e s t o f F a it h ( R u t h 1:8-15) God always tests the genuineness of religious profession, and this les son illustrates this fact.. Ruth was allowed to hear the testimony of the backslider (vs. 8-10). Naomi’s re sources having failed, she spoke as if God, too, had failed. She dwelt ’upon what Ruth must leave rather than upon what was in store for her. “The Lord grant” sounded very pious, but it was a mere heathenish wish to which both young women gave quick answer. But the reality of their profession must be proven. Ruth was also allowed to hear the advice of the backslider (vs. 11-14). Naomi’s advice was worldly; she was turning back her daughters-in-law to their pagan gods. She found fault with the Lord, complaining, “the hand of the Lord is gone out against me.”
