Apparently there was no sorrow for the sin, only for its consequences. Both young women wept bitterly; one kissed Naomi, while the other clung to her. Orpah exhibited mere emotion or soulishness; Ruth had real faith. Ruth was then allowed to hear the warning of the backslider (v. 15). Again, there was ho reminder of possible good to come, but only of what must be left for the Lord’s sake. The backslider always talks about the cost of following Him, never of the blessings to be gained. Thus the Lord was testing the reality of faith, as He ever does (Cf. Luke 9:57, 58). II. T he D ecision of F aith (1:16,17) Ruth’s declaration was clear-cut, definite, final. If she failed, she would lose everything; she turned her back upon the past so that there was no possibility of going back to it. In spite of the discouragement,, and warning from the backslider, she turned her face to the new and un known and untried; by faith she made a deliberate decision. Ruth declared, “Whither thou goest, I will go”—your society shall be mine; “ where thou lodgest, I will lodge”— your home shall be mine; “ thy people shall be my people” — your family shall be mine; “thy God my God”— your religion will ,be mine; “where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried”—your hopes and your end shall be mine. All Ruth had, or ever would be, was bound up in her decision; all of her bridges were burned behind her. This should be true of all who follow the Lord. Points and Problems 1. "The Lord deal kindly with you . . . The Lord grant you that ye may find rest" (vs. 8, 9). In a strange land Naomi is hot ashamed to talk about the Lord. It is evident that all the while she had been in Moab she had not kept her faith a secret. She had taught the truth about Jehovah to Ruth and Orpah and quite likely to others as well. This teaching was not without result. God sees to it that His Word does not return unto Him void. How fruitful and far- reaching was her testimony we do not know, but at least it produced Ruth, one of the most beautiful and wholesome characters in the Old Testament. It pays to bear witness for the Lord. 2. 'Why will ye go with me?" (v. 11). Looked at from the natural standpoint, there was no reason why Ruth and Orpah should leave their father’s country to follow Naomi. She was a poor widow; she had no es tate; she possessed no other sons to give as husbands. But she did have something worth following after; she knew Israel’s God. She was connected
