LESSON FOR MARCH 24 Forces That Unify a Nation LE S S O N M A T E R IA L ! 13-15. G O L D E N T E X T : “ Obey my voice, and 1 will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and w alk ye In all the w ays that I have commanded you, that It may be well unto you" fje r. 7:23). Outline and Exposition I. T h e R ec o g n it io n o f t h e L ord (1, S a m . 7:1-8) Twenty years before, Israel had trusted in the ark Itself rather than in their God whom the ark represent ed; they used It as a kind of pagan charm. Now, In their distress, they “lamented after the Lord” (vs. 1, 2). Samuel told Israel of certain re quirements for restoration to God (v. 3). Idols must be forsaken. Any thing put before God is an idol, how ever precious it may be; even the gifts from God become a curse when they take His place in one’s affec tions. They were also told, “prepare your hearts” ; they were to trust in the Lord (not In the ark), and to serve Him alone. It was Israel’s custom to serve themselves by taking what came from the Lord and using it for their own selfish purposes. Irl response to Samuel’s exhortation, they forsook their idols, and In true repentance, fasted and confessed their sinfulness (vs. 4-6). They, expressed no complaint against the Lord, but rightly- t r a c e d their trouble to its source—their own wickedness. They acknowledged that only in the Lord could real relief be found. The enemy was alarmed by Israel’s repentance (v. 7). When the LoTd does not occupy His rightful place in the hearts of His children, the devil is well satisfied to allow things to go along without interference, but he becomes active when the Lord is ex alted, and given first place. The peo ple had learned that the Lord alone could help them, and that was the channel for securing such help. II. T h e R esp o n s e fro m t h e L ord (7:13-15) The Lord assumed His people’s war fare and soon subdued their enemy (v. 13). Also their property was “re stored to Israel” (v. 14). And finally the Lord gave them protection for the future through the instruction by Samuel all the days of his life (v. 15). In similar manner, the Lord ever answers ‘repentance a n d believing prayer of His children, by interven tion on their behalf. He fights their battles, and raises up leaders for them. 1 Sam . 7:1-8,
