One night Samuel w a s' awakened three times by a voice calling his name. Each time he ran quickly to Eli who said that he had not called Samuel. He told the boy that if the voice called again, he should say, “Speak, Lord, for thy servant heareth.” Samuel obeyed; and God gave him an important message for Eli and his family. As Samuel grew, all of the Children of Israel knew that God had chosen him to be His messenger to them. If Samuel had not been faithful in doing the small daily tasks in the. tempje, God would not have selected him to be a leader for His- people. Perhaps you are wondering why you are never asked to do any of the im portant tasks in your home, in your school, or in your Sunday school. Have you been faithful in doing each small thing? If not, surely no one would trust you to do something more important. Boys and girls who “trust in the Lord and do good” will be trusted by God and by other people to faithfully do the great tasks in life. Samuel confessed this defection of Israel to the Lord and then described to the people what their king would be and do. He declared that their king would not be their servant; they would be his. He would serve himself and not them, -which is ever the man ner of a ruler. He would be, in com mon with all human nature, selfish and grasping. Samuel warned them that their king would take a w a y their sons and daughters for his own purposes; that he would be a dictator; that nothing they possessed would be counted as their own. After helping himself to what he wanted of their property, he would tax the balance so heavily that at last they would cry out "because
