Kicking Off Summer

The months heading into summer are busy for us at the firm— including when it comes to community involvement. If you follow us on Facebook or keep up with the newsletter, you’ve undoubtedly seen the many ways we get involved in our communities, from Corpus Christi to McAllen. In April, we had a wonderful time at Fiesta de la Flor and being a part of the musical celebration of Selena Quintanilla. As you may know, we sponsored El Mercado, and it was great to see so many amazing artists and artisans in one place.

We’re working with more clients who have used Roundup herbicide products in the past and have developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In the past, consumers were not fully warned about the cancer risk of certain types of herbicide. Now, links between Roundup use and non-Hodgkin lymphoma have been found. We’re also handling cases related to the use of talcum powder. Talcum powder, which is made from talc, has been connected to the development of certain types of cancer, including ovarian cancer in women. Right now, researchers are looking into the link, but primary studies suggest there is a link, and women have developed ovarian cancer after using talc-based products. In either case, we’re helping clients seek restitution for developing an illness they had no idea they could get from using what many people consider to be everyday products —many of which are still on store shelves, only now they feature a label indicating there may be some risk. It’s unfortunate this research came too late for many folks across the country. In happier news, our scholarship program is in full swing, and it’s open to both teachers and students! Not only do we have monetary prizes for six high school students but we’ve also extended the prize to two teachers. You can find complete details on our scholarship page at HerrmanAndHerrman.com/scholarship. And be sure to watch our Facebook page, Facebook.com/ HerrmanAndHerrmanPLLC, for updates! We’re looking forward to all the entries, and if last year was any indication, we’re in for a treat!

In May, we sponsored Lemonade Day McAllen. The May 4 event was all about teaching kids about entrepreneurship. It’s a fun gathering that really gets kids engaged not only in the community but also in small business. These events can often plant the seeds of entrepreneurship that kids carry as they grow, attend college, and make life decisions — and it starts with a lemonade stand. Then, on May 18, we sponsored the Beach to Bay Relay Marathon. This race attracts folks from all over the country and the world. After all, it is the biggest relay marathon in America. That same day, we sponsored yet another event at Schlitterbahn Corpus Christi! It was the 2019 Texas Body Painting Festival, which is in its third year. There, we sponsored Family Time, in which all ages were welcomed for body and face painting, along with all sorts of other activities.

Of course, it’s not all fun and games. There is a more serious topic I want to mention. We’ve recently started taking Roundup cases.

Enjoy Your Family Time By Taking a Break from Your Phone

Setting some time aside to be with family is important, but it can be difficult when everyone is always on their cellphones. Constant cellphone use has become a global problem, and the habit is hard to break because we rely on mobile devices heavily for work, school, and keeping in contact with

Forest In the time that Forest takes

control of your device for a set time limit, the app starts growing a tree. Once the tree is fully grown, your time is up, and it joins the other trees that were grown during other breaks. If you pick up your phone and try to access an app, Forest will send you a notification asking you if you want to kill your baby tree by giving up. Who says guilt isn’t a good motivator?

You can also designate times for specific apps to be used throughout the day. Stay Focused Stay Focused is like Siempo, but there are some significant differences. You can set times to access certain apps and put the most distracting ones on lock. Spending time with your family is crucial, and with these apps and tips, you’ll enjoy each other’s company without too many screen distractions.

“I have to say, my attorney, Jonathan Garza, is the best and was able to work my auto accident case. I had no problems! His assistant was by far the best of the best and always kept me up to date. They were on top of everything and not once did I have to call them to see what was going on. They pretty much had all my answers before I could even question anything. I highly recommend Herrman & Herrman to all that need assistance. These people will take care of you and your loved ones. Their hospitality was wonderful. My

SUMMER DRIVING SAFETY

How to Stay Safe When More People Are on the Roads

It’s officially summer, and many more people are out on the road. From families going on vacation to teens being out of school — and being the least-experienced drivers on the road — summer can be one of the most dangerous times to drive. Here are a few steps you can take to stay safe behind the wheel. When on Vacation If you’re driving in an unfamiliar area, that unfamiliarity can lead to a higher risk of getting into an accident. Whether you are just passing through or staying for a while, be sure to acquaint yourself with the local road system. Explore apps such as Google Maps to get an idea of the road layout and traffic patterns, such as one-way streets and dead ends, before you set out on your journey. You can even check congestion. Never rely on GPS navigation too much, however. Keep your eyes on the road, traffic, and pedestrians, and keep distractions to a minimum. During Construction Summertime is construction season, and for most municipalities, that means roadwork. Or, at least, there is more than usual. When you enter a work zone, always drive with caution. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration, June is the biggest month for work-zone crashes. In 2017, there were a total of

799 recorded fatalities in work zones. While slowdowns can be frustrating, following the rules of the work zone will help keep you, your passengers, and the construction crews safe. As a Pedestrian

Just as you need to stay cautious and aware as a driver, you need to be

vigilant as a pedestrian. Keep your eyes up and on passing traffic. Put away distractions. Even texting and walking can be hazardous. One study by the University of Buffalo suggests that distracted walking was even more dangerous than distracted driving. Another study from Stony Brook University found that pedestrians who were distracted by their phones were 61 percent more likely to walk off course. When you’re at intersections and crosswalks, know where the next car is coming from before crossing. Even when you technically have the right of way, never assume the intention of anyone else on the road.

Grilled Beef Ribs

Nothing feels more paleo-appropriate than digging into a giant rack of beef ribs. This largely hands-off recipe requires plenty of hands-on eating, making you feel like one of our cave-dwelling ancestors.

occasionally, for 12–15 minutes. Once charred, transfer to the other side of grill and cook until the thickest part of the rib reaches 130 F, about 2 1/2–3 hours. 3. Let meat rest for 15 minutes. If desired, serve alongside grilled veggies.

1. Heat a charcoal, wood-burning, or gas grill to medium-high. Once heated, move heat source to one side or turn off half of the burners to create an indirect heat zone. 2. Season ribs with salt and pepper and char on the hotter side of the grill, turning

Good Boys of Antiquity Dogs in Ancient Legend

Far before humans had written histories, we had dogs. From hunting and shepherding to playing and relaxing, our early ancestors had canine companions by their side, and their appreciation shows. As storytelling developed around the world, our four-legged friends became important characters. Here are a few ancient legends for

the young woman’s wedding, the faery turns Tuiren into a hound and gives her to Fergus Fionnliath, a renowned dog-hater. This cruel act backfires when the Irish wolfhound wins over Fergus, teaching him to love not just her but all dogs too. In fact, the man is crestfallen when his hound is revealed to be a human. Tuiren’s nephew, the hero Fionn, cheers Fergus up with a new puppy! Yudhishthira’s Stray The Indian epic “Mahabharata” is thought to date back to the eighth or ninth century B.C. and tells the story of two warring families. Toward the end of the tale, prince Yudhishthira and his family begin to ascend the Himalayas to reach heaven, and a stray dog joins them on their journey. One by one, Yudhishthira’s companions fall, until only the prince and his furry friend remain. When the god Indra finally appears to offer Yudhishthira passage into heaven, he brings bad news: The dog cannot come with him. But Yudhishthira refuses to abandon his dog, explaining that he could never leave such a loyal, steadfast companion. Anyone who’s turned down a great apartment offer because they don’t allow pets can relate.

Tarascan Spirit Dogs Many Mesoamerican cultures featured dogs prominently in their myths and legends, especially in regard to the afterlife. One of the most notable of these comes from the Tarascan state, an empire that rivaled the Aztecs. The Tarascans believed canine spirits would search out the souls of lost humans and guide them safely out of the mortal world. Leave it to dogs to create ghost stories with happy endings. Tuiren the Wolfhound In Irish folklore, Tuiren was a beautiful woman to be wed to Iollan Eachtach, but this love made Iollan’s faery sweetheart jealous. In an attempt to ruin
