SAFETY AND SECURITY

SECURITY REPORT

Cathedral City Services: We are pleased to report that Cathedral City has improved their emergency vehicle dispatch maps and training. Our lot numbers and street maps are embedded in their vehicle computer displays. ORPS’ security officers have verified that Police, Fire and Ambulance vehicles are now able to drive straight to your lot without being guided. Please be aware that Cathedral City 911 may ask you for both your lot number and your street name. Please learn your street name (for example 721 Fig Street), but rest assured they will find you with just the lot number. Earthquake Preparation: Emergency officials of Riverside County and Cathedral City made a presentation to owners and the Safety and Security Committee at La Palma on February 9. It was sobering to hear that after a major earthquake it may be several hours before ambulances and fire trucks can drive their assigned routes through the city and arrive here at the Ramon gate to ask us for a list of our most critical needs. We have been advised to organize ourselves to be self-sufficient in our medical, fire and rescue needs. Our strength is that we have a large number of owners and renters who are retired from the medical, police, and fire professions. Our priority is to recruit a core group of these trained professionals and be sure that the resort has tools and supplies on hand to support them when they come forward to assist us. In addition, individual owners and renters need to know that highway closures and interruption of water, telephone and electrical utilities could force us to rely upon our personal resources for water, food, medicines, propane and gasoline for up to a week until we can evacuate. Please google “earthquake emergency preparation” for information. Bicycle Thefts: We are continuing to have a large number of bicycle thefts. In the majority of thefts, the thieves are successfully cutting lock cables. We highly recommend that you add a hardened steel U-Lock in addition to your cables. U-Locks are about $30. Remember:  Bicycle thefts occur between midnight and 5AM  Use a U-Lock overnight as cables are not working.  Please light up your lot until 5AM, especially along the outside walls.  Lock your bikes at the front of the lot, not the rear. You, as a victim, must report thefts to both ORPS security and the Cathedral City police. The police only accept reports from the victim. Our resort is a low priority unless Cathedral City has our reports. Talk to the renters in your neighborhood and encourage them to use U-Locks. The prickly shrubs along the outside walls are a theft deterrent - do not cut these shrubs. Call maintenance for trimming. Continued to the right

Reported Crimes for January 2018  14 Stolen Bikes:  4 found & returned 

7 secured with cable & Cut

5 Unsecured

7 stored in back of Lot All 14 were taken from Lots backing up to a wall or Golf Course. As you all know we are still experiencing a large amount of bicycle thefts. If you look at the statistics for last month you may see a pattern. Some were unsecured yes, but most were secured with a cable lock which was cut through. Most of the bikes were reported to be stored in the back of the Lot at the time of theft. The biggest pattern I see is that ALL of the thefts came from Lots backing to the outer wall or the golf course. This is where the criminals lurk at night in order to stay hidden from my staff and from you. If you store your bikes behind your RV then in essence you are giving easier access the criminals. I urge all of you to secure your bikes towards the front of your lots and secure them with a “U” Lock, preferably under a light source. Should any of you encounter suspicious activity, or people, please call the Gate House IMMEDIATELY. The longer you delay in calling us the more difficult it is to apprehend these subjects. Cathedral City Police Department has been responding to our calls promptly as of late which makes apprehension a lot easier so please remember, every second counts. Lastly, we have been noticing a lot of motorcycle riders not wearing helmets within the resort. I have to remind you all that the California Vehicle Code applies to inside the resort as well which states that helmets are required at all times while the motorcycle is in motion. With that being said, you will also start seeing my staff out with the radar gun and they will be cracking down on speeding from here on out. The speed limit is 10 MPH as soon as you turn in off of Ramon, so please slow down. C OREY S ATHER P OST C OMMANDER PostCommander@ .com Two members of our committee, Chair S TEVE F RIDLEY and T ED P ALIN are retiring after many years of devoted service. We would especially like nurses, and firemen and policemen to join our committee. Please come to our Friday, March 2, 2PM meeting, East Room, at La Palma.
