Session Recess Reveals Hotelier and Philanthropist's Passion for Progress in Eliminating Education Inequality
O ne of the highlights of the Third Business Session was E. Desmond Taylor's command as the presiding officer. He demonstrated an excellent understanding of the Constitution and Statutes of Kappa Alpha Psi ® as well as Robert's Rules of Order, with grace and precision. The seasoned parlia- mentarian managed debate, ruled from the Chair, when necessary, and kept a report-laidened session moving effi- ciently. Another highlight of during the
business session was a message from ho- telier and philanthropist, Harris Rosen, who was recognized by Kappa Alpha Psi ® at the 81 st Grand Chapter Meeting with a Humanitarian Award. The Grand Chapter went into to recess to hear Mr. Rosen's message. Rosen: I want to make kind of a little announcement. For 25 years, we have been involved in a neighborhood here in Central Florida called Tangelo Park—an under-served community that needed
some help. So we created a program where we provide free pre-school for all of the youngsters ages two, three and four. And we provide a free trade school, community college or four-year college education here in Florida, free scholarship, everything included. When we started the program, 45 percent of the youngsters from the neighborhood graduated from high school. Over the last eight years, they have achieved 100 percent graduation rates.
