SPOTLIGHT 83 RD GRAND CHAPTER MEETING: SPVP SPOTLIGHT

Thornton: My work is done as Senior Province Polemarch of the North Central Province Senior as I was appointed Province Polemarch at the 83 rd Grand Conclave by Grand Polemarch Thomas L. Battles. Looking forward to working closely with our next Senior Prov- ince Vice Polemarch. EAST CENTRAL PROVINCE Marcus Bailey Dayton (OH) Alumni Chapter Time serving as Senior: Since May, 2017 Journal: What is one significant initiative you lead as SPVP (for your Province and/or Grand Chapter)? Bailey: East Central Province Infrastructure, which is also a part of the Grand Polemarch’s Six Point Plan for the Fraternity. This par- ticular area, when done effectively, positively impacts all other areas of the plan in some way allowing us to operate at a much higher level of ef- ficiency and achieve greater results. Journal: What does being a SPVP mean to you? Bailey: Being a SPVP means be- ing able to speak, act, and conduct the business of the province in the Polemarch’s absence. It means being a proactive leader within the Province by helping the Polemarch identify, solve, and follow-up on problems within the Province. Being the Senior Vice Polemarch means leading by example and mod- eling the conduct and work ethic necessary for success. It means ac- tively preparing for the opportunity to serve in an even higher capacity someday within the Province or the Fraternity. It also means being able to positively receive and respond to feedback from the Polemarch and the brothers within the province.

of the relationship between the SPVP and the Province Polemarch. Bailey: The relationship between Province Polemarch and SPVP is criti- cal to the success of a province. A strong relationship between any two leaders encourages honest and open communi- cation. It is because of this honest and open communication ideas can be easily exchanged, feedback can be candid, and the SPVP can be clear on the vision of the Polemarch. Strength in relationship also creates unity in message. Although ideas, thoughts, and feelings may differ on how to move forward, the presentation and message to the general body must be consistent. Ultimately the importance lies in the ability for the Polemarch and Senior Vice Polemarch to challenge each other and create a positive outcome. Journal: Why do you feel the role of SPVP is so important?: Bailey: The role of SPVP is important for a few reasons. With all the challenges and changes that the Fraternity faces on a Grand, Province and chapter level, the Province Polemarch has to have some- one committed to work alongside him in the trenches to assure Kappa Alpha Psi ® remains strong within the states we serve. It is also important for leadership training and succession planning. Being the Senior Vice Polemarch does not guarantee the opportunity to be Province Polemarch, but it is important to have the position to prepare for it. J ournal: What are some things you hope to do for your province while being SPVP? Bailey: The East Central Province has always had great leadership and I certainly want to build upon that and make impact within certain areas. The first is efficiency through the use of technology. I would like to make doing the business of Kappa easier for the Province, the local chapters, and each individual Brother. There are a number of ways that we can eliminate ex- cess time and effort but still produce com- plete and compliant results. The next is to continue to improve upon communication

Journal: What is one significant initiative you lead as SPVP (for your Province and/ or Grand Chapter)? Thornton: Membership Re-engagement Initiative (commonly referred to as Amnesty program). Also transformed the Program Documentation for the North Central from a paper process and tabula- tion to an electronic collection process. This process has since been adopted by all provinces for Program Documentation. Journal: What does being a SPVP mean to you? Thornton: Being the SPVP means the brothers in the province trust and respect you, even though they may not agree with you on all things. It means sometimes being a filter for the Province Polemarch on matters brothers are not willing address directly with the Province Polemarch. It means being an advocate for the broth- ers and a sounding board for the Province Polemarch. It means having a command of the Constitution & Statutes and Proto- col of the organization. It means staying current on important issues and initia- tives, being ready to step and lead on a moment’s notice on occasions where the Province Polemarch is not available. Journal: Describe the importance of the relationship between the SPVP and the Province Polemarch. Thornton: The relationship has to be one of mutual respect where the Province Polemarch has confidence in the Senior’s ability and perspective. Journal: Why do you feel the role of SPVP is so important? Thornton: The Senior role is impor- tant because the brothers elect him. It represents the members of the province voice on the leadership of the province. The SPVP is also important because he will lead and develop critical initiatives on behalf of the province. Journal: What are some things you hope to do for your province while being SPVP?
