Dews Conferred with Inaugural John Milton Lee "First to Fire" Memorial Award

U nited States Navy Captain Robert A. Dews, Jr. (Alpha Sigma 1986) was conferred with the inaugural John Mil- ton Lee "First to Fire" Memorial Award for Military Service and Achievement during the 83 rd Grand Chapter Meet- ing's Salute to the Military "I am truly honored to have been se- lected for an award that recognizes the service of Kappa men currently serving in the armed forces, especially in the honor of one of our founders, stated Capt. Dews. "Founder John Milton Lee displayed bravery while serving in the 249 th Field Artillery during World War I and it is very humbling to be associated with an award that supports his legacy." One of the mottos Dews lives by is "The greatest achievements occur dur- ing inconvenient times by those with enduring faith and an unstoppable

passion to pursue a vision that is invisible to others." He also lives by three rules. "Rule number 1. Trust in God; Rule num- ber 2. Assess your situation; Rule number 3. Repeat rule number 1." Brother Dews mentors midshipmen whenever he can, reminding them that responsiblity follows every op- portunity. "I tell midshipmen that their prior achievements have been rewarded with a unique opportunity sought af- ter by thousands of other young men and women across the country." "Now they must develop their leader- ships skills, character, competence and confidence while remaining humble, thankful and willing to give back. They must seize every moment as an opportunity to excel and giving up should never be an option. There is no traffic jam on the extra mile, just

more opportunities and responsibilities."

"The Navy needs more outstanding lead- ers but Midshipmen must first learn the importance of selflessness and working as a team to earn the right to serve their country and wear the uniforms of the United States Navy or United States Marine Corps." Captain Dews was assigned as the Director of Safety, U. S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland in August 2015. He was born in Washington D.C. and raised in Capitol Heights, Maryland. Captain Dews attended Southern Uni- versity A&M in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and graduated with a Bachelor of Sci- ence Degree in Electronics Engineering in 1988. He received his commission as an Aviation Maintenance Duty Of- ficer after completing Aviation Officers’ Candidate School (AOCS) in Pensacola, Florida in May 1989.
