Undergraduate Grand Chapter Officers: A Conversation

we need this to continue seeing our GREAT Fraternity expand. Regarding the advancement and the understanding of the MTA Program, I want to travel to college campus with the other Undergraduate Chapter Officers and stress to our undergraduate brothers the importance of the MTA Program. Undergraduate chapters need to be on board with the program and it starts with the brothers on the yard. Kappa saw record high intake numbers, and this will only con- tinue with an acceptance and un- derstanding of the MTA Program. Additionally, I plan on stressing the importance of maintain high- quality academics to undergradu- ates. We are men of achievement and academics is just one aspect of achievement. Brothers need

easy to be taught a lesson through disciplinary action, but we hope that by doing this we can maintain the maximum amount of running under- graduate chapters on all the yards throughout the country.” Brother Earls suggested, “For obvi- ous reasons, there is always a push for brothers to get back financial with the fraternity. But rarely, if ever, is there dialogue centered on brothers simply getting involved; uniting to push posi- tive causes within their communities, financial or not. To me that is an issue. On the perceptions of an Alumni/ Undergraduate Divide… “Brother Battles’s favorite anecdote is about when he graduated FAMU, and got active with Tallahassee Alumni after a one-year break. When he went to go pay his dues, the alumni broth- ers gave him his money back and paid his dues for that first year. That is the Kappa of my dreams. Within my tenure, I will work actively to change the divisive financial/non-financial, made/paper, rhetoric and work towards one of the mottos of this administra- tion: “Rebirth, reclaim, recommit, by

leaving no brother behind,” continued Brother Earls. “To help undergraduate brothers, develop within Kappa, I plan on emphasizing the importance of having a relationship with Alumni Brothers. I want to make sure undergraduates can reach out to Alumni Brothers for men- torship and guidance,” stated Grand Board Member Garcia. “Ultimately, I intend on this leading into a higher rate of undergraduate brothers joining Alumni chapters. I also want to work alongside the other undergraduate Grand Chapter officers in creating an easier way for Under- graduate Brothers and Alumni Brother to network more efficiently. We want to make sure that we can connect brothers with other brothers in their area of study/work.” Grand Board Member Raxton believes perspective helps. “In re-establishing the connection between Undergradu- ate and Alumni Chapters, there seems to often be a divide which hinders re- tention after the Undergraduate years are done which is essential to the lon- gevity of the organization. Also, I plan

to understand we did not come to college to become a Nupe, but to graduate with our respective degrees. I hope by highlighting what brothers across the country are doing academically and socially, it will encourage all brothers to do the same. Finally, when it comes to our social brand undergradu- ates are the ones that have the most control over this. I want to speak to undergraduates and explain to them that everything we do reflects not only themselves, but Kappa. We will forever be known as “Your Name” the Kappa. I want to encourage brothers to hold themselves to the highest standards on and off campus so that our Brand is intact. This is an undergraduate fraternity and us younger brothers can have a greater say in the way Kappa is perceived.” Brother Garcia continued, “As an under- graduate leadership team we plan to make information on risk management and busi- ness principles readily available to chapters nationwide however our role does not stop there. We must first implement all the things we hope to teach into our own chapters. Once that has been done we will travel to different provinces and different chapters and discuss these principles face to face with brothers to really drive home the importance of the Grand Polemarch’s initiatives.
