KAPPA NEWS: LAW AND SOCIAL JUSTICE

Supreme Court of Nevada, 20 practitio- ners, and one ex-officio member each from the law faculty of the National Judicial College and the William S. Boyd School of Law of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. I serve as one of the 20 practitioners. Regionally, I am the Region IX Direc- tor for the NBA. I oversee all the NBA affiliate chapters located in the Ninth Circuit, which includes the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. Nationally, I was also the past Chair of the NBA YLD in the 2014- 15 bar year. I was recently selected by the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Young Lawyers Division (YLD) to be Vice-Chair of Bar Leadership and on the Membership committee. In these roles, I will help give lawyers the tools become better bar leaders and increase member- ship for the ABA YLD. This year, I also served as NBA representative on the steering committee for the Collaborative Bar Leadership Academy, which incor- porates the ABA and 5 diverse bar asso- ciations, to help tool the next generation of bar leaders. I also serve on NBLSA’s National Advisory Board. Here, I help advise the NBSLA national board of all law students from contracts to organi- zational infrastructure and vision. This year, we will celebrate NBLSA’s 50 th An- niversary, and I am proud to be a part of this organization. Shout out to NBLSA and the National Advisory Board! Q: How have you enjoyed Brother Judd’s leadership of the NBA? Brother Judd has had an awesome year. He has implemented some great pro- grams that I think the LVNBA and other NBA affiliate chapters will incorporate in their programming after his tenure. The JD Edge program that provides programming to increase the pipeline of diverse attorneys was a definite hit. Also, his interest in financial indepen- dence of the African-American commu- nity is evidenced in his support of small business expos. It has been an honor to serve as Region IX Director under his

leadership.

St. Louis, I was determined to become a member of this great Klan. The road was long, rough, and rocky, but my ship made it through in Spring 2003. Com- ing full circle, I was humbled to co- direct the Las Vegas Kappa Leadership League with Brother Joseph Thrower. Yo! to K.S. Kasino (Demitric Franklin and Michael Horton), Big Money Boxin’ Beta Nu, the brothers of the Middle Western (circa 2003-2006) and Western Provinces, and Las Vegas Alumni Chap- ter! Thank you for your support! Q: What is it like having the leader of the Senate and the Assembly in your chapter? It is extremely humbling. Brother Ford and Brother Frierson have been men- tors to me since I graduated law school. Brother Weekly has been a mentor for much longer because he led me in the Kappa Leadership League. These gen- tleman are beyond remarkable. More important, they are approachable. With each of their accomplishments, they could have a certain air about them, but they are down to earth. Even more, I have never seen three men who are unselfish with their time and really look out for African-American men, brothers or not. This hits home for me because

Q: Do you have a favorite case that you’ve worked on that you can share? My pro bono work is some of my most rewarding. I have helped ensure kids, who are wards of the state, find ad- equate families to provide for them. I have helped kids also get their green cards so they can work in this country. Early in my career, I represented a cli- ent, who was alleged to have defrauded numerous people out of millions of dollars via allegedly, unknown, recurring credit card payments. Through vigorous defense and superior negotiating skills, Karl helped persuade the FTC that his client was not a major actor and win- nowed down a potential $286 million dollar liability to a very lucrative settle- ment for his client. I learned about Kappa Alpha Psi ® through the Kappa Leadership League. The then directors, Brother Weekly and Brother Garrett, first showed me what it is to be a Kappa Man. Upon graduation, I learned, in order to lead the Kappa Leadership League, I had to become a member of Kappa Alpha Psi. When I got to Washington University in Q: How did you find Kappa Alpha Psi ® ?
