KAPPA NEWS: GUY L. GRANT AWARDEE—SHYHEME T. MCELROY

nity beginning with our founders and continuing through this very day. I am honored to be a part of this lineage and extremely grateful for the privilege of being a brother of Kappa Alpha Psi. Growing up in a single parent household in Chicago, stripped me from the opportunity of having a positive role model. When arriving at the University of Iowa I met Alexander Lodge, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi. Alex not only provided me with the mentor ship I was lacking by showing me how to succeed, but he also instilled values of brotherhood in me as well. I would like to thank him and other members of Kappa Alpha Psi ® Deandre Bingham (Gamma Chapter) and Boyd James (Iowa City-Cedar Rapids Alumni) for their support, wisdom, and guidance which ulti- mately led me to desiring membership within their fraternity. I would also like to thank Anthonie Perla, Jonathan Parker, Devonte Thompson, Chris Simpson, Stefan Coleman, and Donald Narcisse for being great chapter brothers while on the yard at Gamma. As well as the Gamma brothers that came before me for setting the standard for myself and all the Gamma brothers worldwide. Without their help, I do not know if I would be in the position I am currently in.

Central Province. My time served as a board member and my interaction between other brothers has helped exemplify that we are unified thorough the same common purpose of achievement. I would like to thank Polemarch, Korlon L. Kilpatrick II for the qualities of leadership he has taught me, which I am sure to carry on into future endeavors. As a final remark, I would like to encourage brothers to continue to apply themselves toward approaching great- ness. The great Martin L. King once said, "if you can't fly. Run. If you can't run. Walk. If you can't walk. Crawl. But by all means keep it moving." This quote is one I believe we should all abide by. Many of us get caught up in what the next man is doing, only to forget our own successes. The motto achievement in every field of human endeavor does not manifest itself on one action. With that being said broth- ers we must take the time to realize that we have a history of greatness, starting with are founders and continuing to this very moment. We have notable brothers going to graduate school, receiving jobs right out of college, and starting fami- lies. These are all achievements brothers, and they should be notably recognized. I am honored to receive both these awards as a testament to our continued progression towards achievement and greatness within the bond.

After becoming a brother of Kappa, I made a decision to pursue an undergraduate board position within the North

Publishing achievement for more than 100 years
