Kemptville: local students face uncertain future

In late fall of last year she was told her entire five-year program was moving to Guelph. “So they knew then Kemptville would be closing, but they weren’t telling us,” she said, look- ing back. Students weren’t informed until March 12, too late to get into most other colleges. “I don’t know. I’m just kind of lost right now. I’d planned to live at home. I don’t want to have to go to the city,” said Cole Simzer. “We did tours, we made plans, and there was no prior notice,» added Matthew Bouvier, who had applied for Diesel Mechanics. Colleen Shirley’s plans included two years at Algonquin College then Fleming College, working with farming resources. She is now going to Ridgetown. “But not in agriculture. This will be an environmental diploma,” she added. “And it’s not 45 minutes away, but seven hours.” Saphyre Langlois was enrolled in the fast track Diesel Mechanics two-year course and will now do a one-year welding course fol- lowed by a possible two more years at St. Lawrence College. “It’s a huge negative impact,” she said. “It’s farther away, a long drive, more money and more time as well.” Nicholas McLean was also going into the diesel apprenticeship program. “I might try

Russell students who planned to study at Kemptville College face an uncertain future. The University of Guelph has re- cently announced that it will close the Kemptville campus. And although a solu- tion may be in the works, nothing has yet been confirmed. Eight students from St. Thomas Aquinas High School and about 12 fromRussell High School had been accepted to Kemptville College beginning Fall 2014 but are now left scrambling for alternatives. didn’t have to save money, and now I have to pull $7000 a year out of nowhere, live far away and take time off work.” Nicholas McLean was also going into the diesel apprenticeship program. “I might try Algonquin,” he said. “I’ll need to stay in resi- dence, which I didn’t want to do. I have no firm plans right now.” Christian Nyentap is in the same boat. “I don’t have anywhere else to go.”
