Food bank boss and cadets captain receive Queen’s Jubilee honours

bilee Year is fast approaching along with final presentations of commemorative medals to honour the 60th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen’s Jubilee Year runs from Febru- ary 2012 to February 2013, marking 60 years

since the Princess Elizabeth, at the age of 26, succeeded to the throne of the United King- dom and the Commonwealth following the death of her father, King George VI. Several thousand Queen’s Diamond Jubilee med- als were struck to help commemorate the

occasion and distributed throughout the Commonwealth nations for presentation to citizens who have demonstrated exemplary community service or achievements in their various fields. The latest recipients from Clarence-Rock- land honoured with Jubilee medals are Pe- ter Tilley, who is executive director for the Ottawa Food Bank, and Captain Tina Burns, commanding officer of the 832 Twillick Clar- ence-Rockland Air Cadet Squadron. "Honouring outstanding citizens is a privi- lege," said Pierre Lemieux, MP for Glengarry- Prescott-Russell, during the Feb. 4 presenta- tion to Tilley of his Queen’s Jubilee Medal. The MP noted that Tilley’s nomination as a Jubilee medal recipient also honours the Ottawa Food Bank for its efforts to help more than 40,000 residents of the Ottawa- Orléans area every month along with serv- ing as an additional source of aid to several local food banks in Prescott-Russell and to other food distribution centres that help out families and individuals in need within the National Capital Region. "I couldn’t do it without all of you," said Til- ley, giving credit to the food bank board of directors and volunteers. "This one’s for all of us." Captain Burns received her Jubilee medal from the hands of Brigadier-General J.R. Giguère, SQFT1FOI (East) commander in recognition of more than 20 years service with the air cadets program and "her pride in the program" as a way to develop ca- maraderie and citizenship among young people.
