Nor m ust we grow weary o f try in g new ways and m e th ods to reach the young o f today. If you do happen to be one o f those adu lts who fra n k ly a dm it “ I can’t ta lk to teenagers o r young people” then I say, instead o f ge t tin g upset and panicky over it, stop trying to talk. You are prob ably righ t. You ju s t may have a problem comm un ica ting so maybe it ’s tim e to stop try in g ta lk and w ith great love (the kind on ly God can give— fo r some o f those teenagers are realy obnoxious), a love given by God, s ta rt listen ing . The fa th e r and m other who say to th e ir c h il dren, “ Honestly, I fin d I can ’t ta lk to you, so by God’s love I’m going to listen and maybe I'll never be able to say anything, but my love fo r you continues and goes on and on .” These parents are half-way home. Even as an adu lt, when I am upset by a problem , I go to the person who w ill not in te rru p t my views every tw o seconds w ith fo o l proof solutions. I go to the friend who hears me out — who listens w ith ou t shaking his head “ yes” or " n o ” and very often I fin d myself com ing up w ith the real problem and the real solution. Then the frie n d merely con firm s the rig h t ness (o r the m istake) o f my con clusion. God uses parents as sound ing boards. We are to be made o f a resilien t mate rial, not shatterable, but elastic. Our ch ild ren th row us th e ir though ts and ideas (some really weird ones!) and w ith every fib e r in th e ir bodies the y want us to stand firm , not to break in shock but to listen in love and continue in love. My hats are o ff to you thousands o f parents who really try , pray, and concentrate on God’s wisdom in rearing you r young. Keep on — we’ve go t great kids. They are the D. L. Moodys, the B illy Grahams, th e H e n r i e t t a Mears, the B ill B rights, th e Dr. Sutherlands, the W ernher von Brauns, the Mark Hat fie lds, the Doctor Ralph Byrons of tom o rrow and they are worth every moment of it!
