Community groups may be able to post single signs promoting their programs or events but those signs also require a permit and must meet all other conditions of the signage bylaw. The new bylaw lists all the criteria for setting up highway signage. The counties public works department will notify groups whose signs do not meet the standards of the bylaw and have them either fix the sig- nage to meet those standards or remove the signs altogether. Groups unsure about whether or not their signs will conform to the new bylaw can contact the counties public works depart- ment office.

The aim of the bylaw is not to ban all highway signage other than provincial traf- fic notices and speed signs but to restrict where roadside signs can go. The road allowance along county roads should remain clear of any signage other than provincial, county and municipal traf- fic signs. Any exceptions to that rule require both approval and a permit from the UCPR office. Commercial signs, including real estate promotions and billboards, are still allowed along the highway as usual but they and any other non-traffic signage must be set up outside of the road allowance.
