MAY 2019

FROM THE DESK OF Ty Wilson

May, The Month for Mothers.

Can you believe it? Mother’s Day is around the corner! I cannot think of any other person more deserving of a holiday than Mom. The older I get, the more respect I have for mothers, with their patience, tolerance, and ability to make moments special. They are a truly amazing class of people. Please take time to thank the mothers in your life for making life so special. We are almost halfway through 2019, which is unbelievable. The schools will be letting out soon, and children will be out and about, so pay attention when you are driving in or around neighborhoods. As you know, we have already had a little taste of summer. This is also the time of year when the weather stays hot, and not just for a day or so. Enjoy these longer days, make the most of the daylight, and get outside with friends and family. Here’s another shout out: If you have not gone to see a Savannah Bananas game, you are really missing out on great entertainment. If you watch closely, you may just realize they are also playing baseball!

As kids get older, making time for family vacations becomes more and more important. Once the kids move out of the house, the demands of adulthood make scheduling a time when everyone can get away from work nearly impossible. While parents recognize the importance of continuing to make memories as a family, older kids can be a little harder to convince. Unimpressed teens scoff at the idea of visiting fairy-tale theme parks, and exhausted college students question why they should spend a week in the woods when they could be catching up on some much needed sleep. When you need to take your vacation planning up a notch, rest assured that you won’t have to break the bank to do it. Here are some exciting family vacation destinations that delight kids of all ages. A NEW KIND OF VACATION 7 TRAVEL DESTINATIONS FOR TEENS AND PARENTS

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

Wisconsin Dells is “The Water Park Capital of the World,” and that’s not just a clever slogan from the tourism board. There are over 10 different indoor and outdoor water parks in this city alone. Enjoy lazy rivers, heated pools, wild rides, and miles of slides. Some water parks even offer dry attractions, like the Hades 360 at Mt. Olympus Water and Theme Park, which is the world’s longest underground roller coaster. Described as “Las Vegas for Kids,” Wisconsin Dells is the best place to beat the summer heat.

Park City, Utah

Park City is a top-rated ski resort and a fantastic vacation destination, even without the snow. This time of year, the chairlift will take you to the top for some wild mountain biking or nature hiking. Thrill seekers will take delight in zip lining through the treetops or gliding through the sky in a hot air balloon. This is the great outdoors at it’s very best.

Make It a Game “Out the Door” is an interactive Alexa game that turns getting ready for school into an adventure for younger children. Each day, kids are given a new superpower and have to defeat a different creature as they complete “missions,”which include tasks like brushing their teeth and getting dressed. It makes the process of getting ready for school exciting and gives kids an incentive to fulfill their responsibilities. If you don’t already have an Echo Dot, you can find them at most major retail stores. Make your mornings less stressful by starting with “Hey, Alexa” and going from there.

Even though parents and kids everywhere are getting close to celebrating the last day of school this year, school day mornings are difficult no matter what season it is. Do you feel like you’ve run a marathon by 9 a.m. every day? Rest assured that you’re not alone. Mornings are often the most hectic and stressful part of a parent’s daily schedule. Fortunately, there is an inexpensive and popular device that can help take some of the pressure off your morning routine and get your kids to the bus on time: Amazon’s virtual assistant, Alexa! Alarms of All Kinds You can place an Echo Dot in your kid’s room and set an alarm that wakes them up to the weather report, a standard alarm sound, or their favorite tunes. You can also program Alexa to turn on a compatible bedside lamp so they wake up to light instead of sound, which offers a more calming way to wake up. If your kid decides to catch a few more z’s and ignore their alarm, you can use some of Alexa’s other features, like Drop In and Intercom, to start a two-way conversation or send announcements to all the kids’ rooms in the house.

There are many different opinions on the healthiness of snacking. Some people think of snacks as processed foods with high calories, but snacks don’t have to be junk food. Depending on what snacks you’re eating, and how often, these little in-between-meal bites can be highly beneficial or detrimental to your overall health. People snack when they’re hungry, but they also do it when they’re stressed, bored, or have a habit. When people snack on unhealthy junk food when they’re bored, the result is weight gain. An excellent way to avoid unhealthy snacks is to surround yourself with healthy alternatives. Fill your fridge and pantry with whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and nuts and legumes. With those in your kitchen, you’ll have plenty of healthy options to choose from when you’re hungry. SNACKING What Is It Good For? Healthy vs. Unhealthy Snacks

Who Benefits From Snacking?

Depending on your weight, fitness level, and medical conditions, snacking throughout the day can be

more effective than eating three large meals a day. Individuals who

are crunched for time, have particular health conditions, are athletic, or are trying to lose or maintain weight all benefit from healthy snacking throughout the day. People who have high cholesterol or diabetes can better maintain their cholesterol and blood glucose levels if they eat frequently during the day. For athletes, snacking helps distribute the consumption of nutrients their body needs throughout the day instead of all

at once. This way, their energy levels stay the same instead of fluctuating with their meal times. If you find yourself in need of a quick bite, think clementines and almonds instead of chips and Pop-Tarts. You’ll still satisfy your hunger without jeopardizing your health or increasing your waistline.

OUT OF THE DARK AND ONTO THE WEB The Golden Era of Athletes on Social Media

It’s not an overstatement to say that social media has revolutionized the way we live our lives today. But with that massively powerful platform comes a massive responsibility, especially if you’re already in the spotlight. Athletes have taken the opportunity social media affords them to build their personal brands and engage in community outreach with the fans who look to them as role models, but there’s a downside to cataloging years of unfiltered thoughts on the internet. For better or worse, social media is here to stay, and we have full access to all the drama that unfolds for our entertainment. Despite the web’s potential for good, some pros can’t seem to get the message that every post falls under the scrutiny of the public. PR firms representing players have nowmade it a top priority to keep their clients’ images in line by scrubbing old posts that could be offensive and land them in hot water. Still, though, it seems like there’s a new controversy every week. One of the best examples comes courtesy of former football star“Johnny Football”Manziel. The former Heisman Trophy winner was notorious for posting embarrassing images of himself partying when he should have been practicing, and he often blasted his private issues in public, seemingly

with no filter. He’s out of a job now, most recently having been banned from the Canadian Football League. For every bad apple, though, there is a bushel of athletes who use their platforms for the greater good. Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt, five-time Pro Bowler and NFL star, has used his social media“juice”to spread the word about his charity, raising over $4.6 million for youth athletic programs and organizations. Philanthropy aside, part of the beauty of celebrity social media is that the people who seem so much larger than life become accessible because of it. In decades past, you might have written a letter that, if you were fortunate, got a response from some unpaid intern. Today, fans can reach out directly to their favorite athletes. It is a personal connection unparalleled in history. What a time to be alive.
