Superb summer weather heralded a great season for College sport, with excellent results across a range of codes at regional, South Island and national events. Athletics The New Zealand Track & Field Championships were held in Christchurch in March, for the first time in 10 years. Wet and cold conditions did not help various events but some College boys achieved personal bests and top 3 performances. In the U18 competition Alfie Baker achieved a great double with 3rd placings in both high jump and javelin, while Charlie Cameron was 2nd in pole vault. Jordy Annand continued his successful season with a 3rd in the U20 long jump, while Edward Hsing was 2nd in pole vault. Edward also competed in the Senior pole vault and finished a very creditable 5th in New Zealand. For College athletes, summer tournament week was book- ended by the Canterbury school championships at the beginning of the week, followed by the South Island school championships in Nelson at the end of the week. In the Canterbury schools championships, College achieved 14 championship titles with two new records, 11 2nd placings and seven 3rd placings. Canterbury titles went to Sam Idiens (U15 3000m – new record), Jasper Moss (CP 100m and 200m), the U14 4x100m relay team of George Smith, Joseph Nash, Jack Bethell and Lachlan McVicar, Kyle Houston (U16 3000m), Charlie Cameron (U16 pole vault – new Canterbury record), Marcus Hamilton (U16 hammer), Jordy Annand (U19 long jump and triple jump), Alfie Baker (U19 high jump and javelin), Edward Hsing (U19 pole vault),
Matt Todd (U19 hammer), and the U19 4x400m team of Chris Ireland, Matt Durant, Robbie McKeown and Jordy Annand The College team then travelled to Nelson for the South Island school championships. In great conditions the team finished with seven South Island titles, six 2nd placings, eight 3rd placings and 17 personal best performances. South Island titles went to Nont Prachuabmoh (U15 triple jump), Jasper Moss (U15 100m, 200m and 400m CP), Charlie Cameron (U16 pole vault), Marcus Hamilton (U16 hammer) and Alfie Baker (U19 high jump). Cricket The season began with College hosting the annual Trans-Tasman cricket tournament at the end of January. The tournament involves King’s College (Auckland), Canberra Grammar and Shore School (Sydney). It was a very good week of preparation for the 1st XI and they lost two close matches when providing sporting declarations to the opposition to chase. The local season started well with two day wins over St Bede’s College and St Andrew’s College 2nd XI and then a great run chase to win against Otago
Boys’ High School in the annual exchange (the 2nd XI also won against OBHS for a very good double this year). College lost to the two top sides – Christchruch Boys' High School and StAC to finish 3rd overall. The team completed the term with their annual match against Whanganui Collegiate School. Having led after the first innings, College set Whanganui a target late in the day which the opposition achieved with only a few balls and wickets to spare. 1st XI captain Nic Lidstone, was recently selected in the NZ U19 wider squad with the team to attend the World Cup in South Africa in January 2020 to be named later in the year.
