A second group of sailors then travelled to Picton for the Top of the South teams regatta, held at the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club. College had a slow start to the first two rounds on day one, only winning one out of four races during each round, but improved vastly over the next two rounds on day two to place 2nd in the Silver fleet after four rounds, with a total of 16 races completed. The final day was lost due to lack of wind, with College finishing 7th overall out of 14 teams. At the nationals, held at Algies Bay north of Auckland in April, College placed 9th in Silver fleet, and 18th out of the 28 teams competing. At this event, all teams – single sex, co-ed, of all year levels – compete in open competition. The boys started in the Bronze fleet, but were promoted after the round 1 repechage. Initially, they struggled in the Silver fleet, but after winning a second repechage after round 2 they started to make headway. In the next two rounds they increased their win–loss ratio each round, with their best round being round 4, when they won three of eight races. Rupert Limbrick has been named in the New Zealand 420 sailing team to attend the world championships in Portugal in July. This term Rupert won the South Island schools 420 sailing championship. Swimming Earlier this term, Year 13 student Louis Clark travelled to Mt Maunganui to compete in the NZ Schools Open Water championships, a 1.25km ocean swim with a total of 154 competitors across a variety of age grades and gender. Louis was the first U16 male swimmer home, the first male swimmer home (out of 70 racers) and the first overall swimmer home (out of 154 swimmers). Congratulations to Louis on this outstanding national title.
racing, achieved a bronze in the coxed four event and a silver in the coxed eight, finishing behind HBHS by less than a second. The top College rowers achieved a bronze in the coxed four Springbok Trophy race and then went agonisingly close in the Maadi Cup, losing to CBHS by just over a second to claim a silver, but producing a great effort in defence of the cup. The College crew was Tom Tothill, Alex Todhunter, Will Chaffey, Guy Chaffey, Jamie Batchelor, Fletcher Anderson, Lachie Hazlett, Jack Elvy and Fin Smith.
After the regatta Jamie Batchelor, Jack Elvy and Alex Todhunter were selected to attend NZ junior trials in Karapiro during the holidays. Sailing A junior sailing team travelled to Ashburton for the Central South Island team racing competition and won the Silver fleet to finish 5th overall. In the round robin competition, the team had wins over Timaru Boys’ High School, Mt Aspiring College and Otago Boys’ High School and finished the regatta with six straight wins. The three boats were skippered by Louis Hitchings, Oscar Chaffey and Max Luisetti.
