College – Issue 36

The term ended with the Canterbury swim championships at Jellie Park. College was well represented across all age groups and relay teams. After a day of racing College had 12 podium finishes, with five Canterbury titles. Louis Clark won the Open 200m freestyle, Nathan Penrose the Open 100m backstroke and James Currie the Boys 15yrs 50m breaststroke. Daniel Bridgman had a successful day by winning the Boys 12–13 years 50m freestyle and then being part of the winning Boys 12–13 years 4x50m freestyle relay team. Other College swimmers in this team were Max Harris, Jordan Astley and Alex McEwan. The College team also achieved two seconds, five thirds and a number of personal bests for a successful meet. Tennis The NZSS Tennis Tournament finished with College placed 3rd in the country. The team was made up of Will Schneideman, Liam Adams, Nick Schneideman, Jenner Johnson and Nant Prachuabmoh. The tournament started with a six-hour tie against St Andrew’s College that saw College defeat them 5–1 and then back that up with a 4–2 victory over Hamilton Boys’ High School, where College demonstrated how strong their doubles combinations are at present. The final pool match saw College take on Botany Downs Secondary College (Auckland) losing narrowly in a close tie. That result saw College finish 2nd in the pool but qualified them for the semi-final against St Kentigern, last year’s winners and Number 1 seeds. Unfortunately, this year St Kentigern were too strong in the singles in the semi-final. This meant College again played Botany for 3rd place. A change in tactic by resting Will, wins to Liam at Number 1 and Nant at Number 4, as well as two strong doubles matches, saw College defeat Botany in another tight tie to claim 3rd in the country. This is another great result for the tennis team

who took the South Island schools title earlier in the term for the third successive year. In the local team competition College won the Premier Boys competition, was 2nd in the B Grade Division 1 competition, and won both junior and Year 9 grades. The junior team of Rheon Salt, Henri Murison, Johnny Bullen, William Morris and Isaac Heap went unbeaten this term. The winning Year 9 team was Lucca Wiseman, George Brakenridge, George Austin, Ed Davidson and Zach Adams. In the Canterbury schools tennis championships, College won the Year 11 doubles title (Nant and Nont Prachuabmoh), and Senior singles (Will Schneideman) and

doubles titles (Will Schneideman and Tom Down). Triathlon The annual Canterbury secondary schools triathlon championships were held at Sumner in cold, damp conditions. College had a small group of individuals competing in the swim, bike and run event. Over 80 individuals and teams competed, and at the end of racing College had two podium finishes. Sebastian Fergusson was the 12th person home overall and finished 3rd in the U19 male individual race. Kyle Houston was the 2nd person home and only beaten by an U19 team. He won the U16 grade event and was the first individual home beating the top U19 athletes.
