This year’s NZSS triathlon was held in New Plymouth, with two days of racing catering for a variety of individual and team events. Sam Idiens and Kyle Houston competed for College in the U16 grade. In the individual race Kyle was 16th and Sam 19th with Sam still with another year in the grade. The two boys then joined with two Christchurch Girls’ High School students in the team events. As one of the girls was over 16 the team competed in the U19 mixed grade. In both the Team Tag Relay and the T1 T2 Transition relay the team finished 2nd to claim two silver medals in this national event. Volleyball Last year College entered a junior team in the Canterbury school championships for the first time and competed well. This term the same team, now in Year 11, welcomed a couple of additional players and competed in three Senior tournaments. The first was the South Island schools, which was a real learning curve. Despite playing some good volleyball, they only managed a couple of wins. In the Canterbury secondary school senior champs playing in Division 2, the team played seven games over three days. In round robin play the team lost close
matches to St Andrew’s College, Shirley Boys’ High School and Riccarton High School before winning 3–0 over Cashmere High School. They then played Cashmere again in the first play- off match to determine who would make the semi-final. College won and then played top seed Riccarton B. In a great game, the team lost the first set then went on to win the next three to make the final against StAC whom they had lost to twice in previous matches. In the final College won the first set 25–23 with StAC winning the second 26–24. It was a very competitive match, with both sides playing well. College won the third set 28–26 and held on to take the 4th and winning set by 25–21 to claim the school’s first regional volleyball title. In tournament week the team played in a Christchurch satellite tournament, which saw them play six games over two days. They had wins over Dunstan High School, Rangiora New Life, Cashmere, Riccarton and Hornby High School with only one loss to St Thomas of Canterbury College. Both College and St Thomas finished top with one loss each, but St Thomas were awarded 1st place due to countback on sets. It was still a very creditable 2nd for the College team, to finish a great
term of volleyball. The tournament team was Fiti Sa, Jeremy Kinley, Cam McCarthy, Jake Tacon, Rory Doull, Josh Book, Jayden Sa, Louis Elworthy, and Hanjun Kim. In the local competition College was successful with the Year 11A side finishing 2nd in Senior Division 1, Year 11 White winning the Senior Division 3 competition, and the Year 9 side coming second in the Year 9 competition. Water Polo Christchurch hosted the South Island schools water polo championships at Jellie Park and QE II. College began the tournament with a dominant win over St Bede’s College Black by 30–0 before defeating King’s High School by 19–6 after the first quarter was pretty even. This was followed by a 15–8 win over Otago Boys’ High School to keep the team at the top of the pool with only one game to play. The last game of pool play was against Shirley Boys’ High School which College won 27–4 to advance as top seeds to the semi- finals. In the play-off matches both 3rd seeds beat the 2nd seeds, so College played King’s once again for a place in the final. A closer game still saw College win and advance through with a 14–6 win, to face St Bede’s who have been the only side to defeat College this term. In the final, St Bede’s were not going to give up their unbeaten run against College and eventually showed their class to defeat College and claim the title. College did very well to claim 2nd in the South Island to go along with their 2nd place in the Canterbury competition. Louis Clark made the tournament team and was chosen as the tournament MVP, with mentions also to Moe Gath, Isaac Aitken, Jacob Clements and Ben Cornell who each played a major part in the success of the team this year.
