A Celebration to Remember I had never been so

T his time of year, I am reminded not only of the men and women who serve our country and ensure our freedoms, but of the memories I made with my family each Fourth of July. One memory, in particular, always comes to mind. When I was a child, my family and I were members of the Italian-American club. In 1976, the club put on a parade to celebrate the 200th anniversary of our country’s independence. My father owned a Jeep at the time, so naturally he was asked to pull the float. He agreed, and he even bought festive red, white, and blue-striped pants for the occasion. I still remember those pants. He put everyone else to shame with his patriotism. My brother and I were part of the parade, but we didn’t sit with my dad as he pulled the float. Instead, we handed out candy and flags to everyone in attendance. I felt like the entire town showed up, and I was bewildered by the amount of candy we handed out — it felt like hundreds of pounds. My brother and I

were so proud to be a part of the celebration, and the heat didn’t slow us down one bit. Still, we were both exhausted by the end of the parade, and we spent the rest of the day drinking ice-cold water as we recovered in the shade. I was especially fatigued since I wore long pants to the parade, but I trucked on and completed the two-mile route while sweating like a pig.

proud to be an American

as I was that day.

The Fourth of July holds a special place in my heart, partly thanks to this memory. I had never been so proud to be an American as I was that day, and I felt an extra sense of pride walking with the Italian-American Club. The next parade won’t be until 2076 to celebrate America’s 300-year anniversary, and I feel so fortunate to have walked it in my lifetime. I hope the next kids who hand out candy recognize the importance of the parade, and I hope it fills them with as much pride as I felt that day. Today, I try to make it to as many Fourth of July celebrations as I can. Each parade reminds me of my experience as a kid, and I am filled with nostalgia and happiness when I watch children hand out candy just like I did. This year, I plan on wearing my special shirt, complete with stars and stripes, as I hang out with family and enjoy some delicious food and fireworks. I am so proud to be an American; we live in the best country in the world.

Happy Independence Day!

Independence Day

Independence Day is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) holidays here in America. It’s the day that we all celebrate our freedom and enjoy a few days of summertime worry-free bliss. Since we want you all to have a lot of family fun this year, we’ve put together this calendar of events for you to enjoy! Cape Coral

Fort Myers Beach Parade This event is fun for the whole family! The parade will run along Estero Boulevard between School Street and the Time Square area from 10–11 a.m. Make sure to get to the parade spot by 9:30 a.m. (the Matanzas bridge will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to noon!).

Cape Coral’s Red, White, and Boom! celebration takes place on the Fourth in Cape Coral. More than 30,000 people are expected to show up this year. The event takes place on the evening of the Fourth and begins at 5 p.m. Make sure to get to the Cape Coral Parkway before 5 p.m., since the streets will be blocked off for safety reasons (and you’ll want to get a good seat!).

Fort Myers Beach Fireworks If you’re in the beach area for the parade, you may want to stick around for the evening fireworks on the Fourth. The fireworks happen from 8:45– 10 p.m. The Matanzas Pass Bridge will be closed from 9:30–11 p.m. to oncoming traffic only (so you can still get off the island).

Fort Myers

The Downtown Fort Myers Freedom Fest happens on the evening of the Fourth, from 4–10 p.m. The Freedom Fest will take place in the River District, and it will include a live band, a bouncy castle for the kids, and a lot of other fun things for the whole family to enjoy. The evening will end with a lot of fireworks!

Naples On the Naples Pier West, you will be able to see a display of fireworks starting at 9 p.m. You can also book a boat tour to see the show from the water!

Fort Myers Miracle Independence Weekend Fireworks This happens on the evening of July 3, with post-game fireworks. Come and enjoy a baseball game (the Miracles versus the St. Lucie Mets) during the day, and cap the evening off with a bang.

Sanibel Sanibel is in the Fourth of July spirit, with activities happening all day long! You can start the day with a hearty pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. and spend the entire day immersed in red, white, and blue festivities, including a parade, a road rally, sidewalk sale specials, and (of course!) fireworks, starting at 9 p.m.

Drunk Driving Accidents Summertime Means an Increase in

The summer months mean swimming, relaxing, and enjoying the outdoors, not to mention that warm summer sun. But the warmer summer months also bring an increase in drunk driving. There is a myriad of reasons why this happens — people are on vacation, life is more relaxed, and people simply become reckless — but it doesn’t have to happen in such high numbers. And while there are many reasons given for driving while intoxicated, there are zero excuses. It is simply a bad idea to get behind any kind of wheel (whether boat, car, or otherwise) after you have been drinking. Here are some numbers to think about. Summertime Drunk Driving Numbers • Over the past five years, an average of 10 people per day have died from drunk driving during the summer months. That number totals around 1,022 people. • Drunk driving numbers increase during the summer months because there are more people on the road (in addition to other reasons). • Teen deaths caused by drunk driving drastically increase during the summer months. • Teen deaths from drunk driving increase around 16 percent during the summer.

You can attempt to prevent accidents caused by drunk driving by simply not getting behind the wheel after you have been drinking. But

it’s hard to prevent deaths caused by other drunk drivers. You can’t prevent someone else from driving drunk on the same road that you are traveling on. Sadly, many innocent drivers are killed every year by intoxicated drivers. However, there is one thing that you can do. Try not to travel as much during the popular summer holidays. The most popular summer holidays (or the days when drunk driving increases) include Fourth of July, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. Staying home and relaxing in the backyard is the safest place to be. If you do plan on traveling during those months, make sure that you have not been drinking, and do not let your children or anyone else get into a car, for any reason, with a person who has been drinking. Feel free to check out our website dedicated specifically for victims of drunk driving at www. holddrunkdriversaccountable.com for helpful tips.

Spotlight on

Jeff Lampley is one of our newest Attorneys, though not so new to our firm! Jeff has actually been a member of our team for the last nine years and has been an attorney with us for the last three years. When we asked Jeff what drew him to go to law school he said, “I’ve always had an interest in the legal profession; the ability to affect change on society as a whole is intriguing.” What most of our clients probably don’t know about Jeff is that he has a tremendous sense of humor. Jeff keeps us laughing most of the time, especially

Ingredients • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 jalapeno, minced • 1 cup quinoa • 1 cup vegetable broth • 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed • 1 (14.5-ounce) can fire-roasted diced tomatoes

• 1 cup corn kernels, frozen, canned, or roasted • 1 teaspoon chili powder • ½ teaspoon cumin • Salt and pepper to taste • 1 avocado, halved, seeded, peeled, and diced • Juice of 1 lime • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves

Jeff Lampley

in the attorney meetings with his witty one-liners. One of his funniest stories to tell involves the time he was “voluntold” (so he says) to help with the effects of the torrential downpour one summer. He makes it sound much more dramatic than it really was, but it always makes us giggle anyway. We believe that Jeff learned many things at the firm before attending laws school — like how to fix a drain pipe, a roof leak, A/C problems, etc. Basically, he was given all the tools one needs to succeed, in law school and in life.

Directions 1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add garlic and jalapeno and cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant, about 1 minute. 2. Stir in quinoa, vegetable broth, beans, tomatoes, corn, chili powder, and cumin; season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil; cover, reduce heat and simmer until quinoa is cooked through, about 20 minutes. Stir in avocado, lime juice, and cilantro. 3. Serve immediately.

Get Up Offa That Thing!

GET UP OFFA THAT THING! IF YOU WANT TO LIVE MORE, SIT LESS

“Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV, and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death.” Those are the words of Dr. James Levine, who made headlines back in 2014 when he released the results of years of research into what’s really killing Americans. Just as cigarette use was killing Americans in droves back when the population still smoked, the prevalence of desk jobs is a huge health risk today. Humans, it turns out, are meant to be on their feet and on the go, just like our ancestors were. “We have created for ourselves a modern way of living that clashes with the way we’re meant to be,” Levine says. We’ve seen that sitting can also lead to other health issues, like carpal tunnel syndrome, pinched nerves, and strained eyes and muscles. And if you’re not in good shape (because you sit all day at work), you’re more likely to get injured doing other activities in your life. Levine says that ideally, you’d spend four hours a day on your feet. Of course, that may not be an option for many of you, especially if you work a desk job. We recommend getting up at least once an

hour and walking around for a few minutes. Even a trip to the water cooler is better than nothing!

But the real way to combat a sedentary job is to live an active life after hours. A lot of us want to plop down in front of the TV, but we’d be better off taking a long walk after work and spending some time cooking in the kitchen — on our feet, of course.

You can also go to a standing desk, or even a treadmill desk — which Levine invented.
