Building a Post-War Network
In the aftermath of the Second World War, the Commonwealth confronted the urgent need to rebuild and modernise its communications. To meet this challenge, the Commonwealth Telecommunications Board (CTB) was established in 1948. Its purpose was to coordinate cable and wireless services among member states, set technical standards, and ensure long-distance telephone and telegraph connections across the Commonwealth. Beyond infrastructure, the CTB also nurtured expertise through training programmes and exchanges, helping countries build the professional skills needed to operate modern telecommunications.
