KEY FINDINGS

♦ By design, the students in these samples were college-oriented. > 2 in 3 in both surveys had GPAs of 3.5 or higher > 9 in 10 saw themselves in college 2 years from now > 3 in 4 of the students had already applied to college ♦ Students were oriented to out-of-state and private schools and UW > Asked which schools they were interested in, in both surveys the top 4 included UW, private out-of-state (as a category), public out-of-state and private in-state schools > CWU ranked 7 th in “interest” both surveys – 4 th among the state schools behind UW, WSU and WWU > 4 in 10 students in both surveys who had applied to college and been accepted had already been accepted to CWU. That amounts to 9% of the sample. COLLEGE DECISION FACTORS ♦ Students ranked Cost as the #1 factor they weigh when consideringa college, > Specific programs (majors) were 2nd, followed by Teaching quality ♦ Parents ranked the same 3 factors at their top 3, but in differentorder: Teaching Quality, then Cost, then Programs. ♦ Campus visits were the #1 method – by far – for both studentsand parents to get “useful information” about a college. ♦ Students were most likely to turn to parents for advice about college > 6 in 10 “definitely” would ask parent for advice > Twice as many as “definitely” would ask teachers or counselors ♦ Parents, in turn, expect to be involved and influential in thecollege choice > 4 in 10 said they were “very involved” in the decision > 4 in 10 said they would have “a great deal of influence” over the choice
