CENTRAL WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY

In order to produce a comprehensive picture of Central Washington University through the eyes of students and parents, the final portion of the questionnaire focused exclusively on CWU. Respondents were asked detailed questions about their impressions of CWU, what they found attractive and unattractive about it, and whether they would consider applying there. This section presents these findings and compares the descriptions of CWU of those who were inclined with those who were disinclined to consider CWU. Awareness of CWU Nine in 10 students had heard of Central Washington University, although more than half (54%) said they “don’t know much about it.” In total then, 2/3 (65%) either had not heard of CWU or knew it in name only. One in 5 (22%) had visited the campus, including 50% of the seniors in the survey. Most likely to be familiar with CWU, including visiting the campus, were students who were: • Seniors (67% vs 17% of Juniors and Sophomores); • from the smallest schools (42%), • with GPAs under 3.5 (43%); • Hispanics (56%); • from outside the Puget Sound Region (50% fromWestern Washington and 47% for Eastern Washington v. 21% in Seattle and 27% in the rest of the Puget Soundregion). Descriptions of Central Respondent images of CWU were developed in a number of ways. In this section we used a semantic differential technique that presented respondents with pairs of opposite attributes and asked them to indicate which item in each pair best describes CWU (e.g., “challenging” or “easy”). There were 15 pairs of attributes. For each pair, respondents indicated whether the attribute at one end of the scale or the other was “very” descriptive, or “mostly” descriptive of CWU, or whether CWU was “balanced” between the two. This resulted in a 5-point scale for each pair.
