CWU: S TUDENT & P ARENT S URVEY

29 One of the striking features of these findings is the large proportion of respondents in the middle of the scale. In the both the students and parents surveys, “balanced” was the most-cited response for 11 of the 15 attribute pairs. Some 21% of the students and 26% of parents did not participate in this exercise. There are always several ways to interpret scale items. On their face, these findings indicate that respondents think CWU is balanced between the two opposite attributes. The center could also contain a number of respondents who have no opinion. Marking the middle of the scale may be another way of saying “I don’t really know.” Either way, the findings suggest that most respondents did not have a strong image of CWU. Not highly regarded (vs. prestigious) Another six were cited by more than 30% of students: 4. Relaxed (vs. intense) 5. Good location (vs. isolated) 6. Isolated 7. Attractive campus (vs. unattractive campus) 8. Comfortable (vs. uncomfortable) 9. Easy (vs. challenging). The parents had a more diffuse ranking. None of the attributes were cited by as many as 40% of the parents. The top three were the same as the students, but in slightly different order. Each topped 35%: 1. Back up school 2. Not highly regarded 3. Welcoming and friendly Three more were cited by at least 25% of parents, all but one of which were also atop the students’ list: 4. Relaxed 5. Focused on teaching (vs. focused on research) 6. Isolated. The complete lists are displayed in the graphs on the following tables. Inclination to Apply to CWU About half of the students said they could at least “see themselves” going to CWU including: 12% who had already applied;
