sure. Christ as the rudder is sufficient to guide the boat through the rapids and into port.—W. H. G r if f it h T h o m a s . AUGUST 20 W h ere C h rist May Joyfully A bide “He will rejoice over thee with joy” (Zeph. 3:17). Christ has fully set forth the conditions of our union with Himself, that our fel lowship may result in a double gladness— His own, and ours. For the great work of furnishing home and love for Christ, the power of His Spirit has been given to us. For the Ephesians, Paul prayed that the Father would “grant you, according to the riches of his glory to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man; that Christ may dwell [literally, settle down ] in your hearts by faith.” By the Spirit we abide in Christ, and by and in the Spirit we also furnish a dwelling place in our hearts in which Christ may joyfully abide. . . . If I am occupied only with abiding in Him, it is easy to become unduly engrossed with my own welfare and in terest. But, remembering that He has said, “I will dwell in them and walk in them,” I have all the happy business of furnishing what He looks for in His dwell ing place.—C. G. M oore . AUGUST 21 T he W ay to a B road a n d W ealthy P lace “Even so would he have removed thee out of the strait into a broad place” (Job 36:16). We are all in danger of becoming nar row. . . . Afflictions seem to hamper the soul and limit its activity, but these strait places in life are permitted to deliver us from a straitness of soul. There is always a broad place beyond the strait one, and the sooner we allow ourselves to be allured out of the straitness, the sooner will our feet stand in a large and wealthy place. No one knows the breadth and depth of life like those who have been through the waters of affliction; and the message of Elihu to every sufferer is: The present straitness opens into a broad place, into the fresh air and bright sunshine of sanctified affliction. —J. G regory M a n t l e . It is not human nature to be sincere. Human nature is carnal, proud, and selfish. Humility is not a trait of the natural human heart. The only humility known to the worldly man is the humility that is proud of its humility. It is not human nature within us that bends our sympathies and drains our compassion, as We witness the need and sorrow of men. Human na ture does not minister; it lives to be ministered to. The dross that Christ comes to refine out of us is simply our fallen human nature. When He is through with us, only His nature will appear. — H . P. H o p k in s . AUGUST 23 W hen God Say* “ W ell D one” “To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of. God” (Rev. 2:7). AUGUST 22 T h e M anifestation of R efinem ent "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (Psa. 51:10).

The greatest battlefields of history are invisible. The arena wherein are gained the most glorious victories is unseen. The history of the triumphs of faith is unwrit ten to a very large extent. There are two records for every moral conflict—the rec ord on the score card of public approval, and the record on the character of the winner. Sometimes public opinion renders the verdict of defeat, when in reality God, who reads the heart, sanctions an act with His “well done.” . . . Character is greater than cash. The things of God outweigh the things of gold.— B . B r a u n s t e in . “He is altogether lovely” (Gant. 5:16). Christ is infinitely lovely and infinitely lovable. The richest of all human experi ences is the experience of daily fellowship with Jesus Christ. His promises never fail us. His friendship abides unceasingly. His love never grows cold. He is equal to every problem and every emergency of our individual lives. Doubts destroy the peace and soul-satisfaction which God wants us to enjoy. There is not an atom of real ground for disbelief in Jesus Christ or in anything He said. . . . No expecta tions go unfulfilled where faith in Jesus is complete. Our outlook in life is com pletely changed when we turn away from the world with its allurements to Jesus Christ.—A. Z. C onrad . AUGUST 24 O ne W e C an T ru st “Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life” (Rev. 2:10). In the last letter written by the martyr William Tyndale to the martyr John Fryth, these words occur: “Dearly beloved, however the matter be, commit yourself wholly and only unto our Father and most kind Lord, and fear not men that threat, nor trust men that speak fair; but trust Him that is true of promise, and able to make His word good . . . Let not your body faint. He that endureth to the end, shall be saved. If the pain be above your strength, remember, ‘Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do,’ and pray to your Father in that Name, and He shall ease your pain, or shorten it. The Lord of peace, of hope, and of faith be with you. Amen. Your wife is well con tent with the will of God and would not for her sake have the glory of God hin dered.”— The Dawn. “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye" (Psa. 32:8). God will be the same in His feelings and dealings toward us amid the crash of matter and the wreck of worlds as He is today. . . . The love we derive from the heart of God and have to each other abideth forever. The peace we receive deepens in its perennial flow. The patience, courage, strength of character which we acquire here with so much pain are not to go out as a candle, or vanish as a puff of smoke. If it were so, what would become of God’s infinite painstaking? . . . Oh, let us not murmur at the slow progress of our educa tion and at the care that God takes for us AUGUST 25 A M a rty r’s C ounsel AUGUST 26 T rain ed for E ternity
