Do you experience pain in the buttock, leg, or even your foot? If so, you may be experiencing sciatica. Sciatica is a common form of back and leg pain that is often misunderstood by sufferers. People frequently have questions about what sciatica is, why it occurs and how to find relief from the intense pain it can cause from the low back down to the feet. If you are suffering from sciatica, it is important to find its root cause. Many people often think an x-ray or expensive MRI is first needed to figure out what is causing pain. Having a lot of tests doesn’t mean you will find its root cause. Recent studies show that nearly 1 million of MRIs done for sciatica fail to find a treatable cause. With a new imaging technique called magnetic resonance neurography, 69% of the patients were found to have a trapped sciatic nerve deep in the buttock by a muscle called the piriformis. It is known that in about 25% of the general population,

the sciatic nerve pierces through the piriformis muscle and can be susceptible to abnormal pressure and irritation. Why Does Sciatica Occur? If there are changes in posture, muscle strength or pelvic alignment, the nerve can be compressed which leads to the quite common low back and sciatic nerve pains. The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in your body. It even reaches down to the foot and therefore, can be irritated anywhere along its path. With sciatica, the consequent ache can be felt anywhere from the base of the spine, the buttocks or the back of the thigh and legs. Even tingling sensations in the toes can be attributed at times to the impingement of the sciatic nerve.

Healthy Recipe: Sweet Potato Soup

INGREDIENTS • 4 pounds sweet potato • 6 tbsp vegetable oil • Kosher salt • 4 medium carrots, diced • 1 medium onion • 5 cloves garlic

• 2 sprigs sage • 2 quarts low-sodium chicken stock • 1/4 cup orange juice and 1 tbsp zest • 3/4 cup pistachios • 2 scallions • 2 tbsp mint leaves • Pinch cayenne pepper • 1/2 cup olive oil

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 300°F. Toss sweet potato with 4 tablespoons vegetable oil and salt. Spread sweet potato on 2 rimmed baking sheets and bake for 1 hour. Increase oven temperature to 375°F and cook until sweet potatoes are tender and lightly browned around the edges, about 25 minutes. In a large pot, heat remaining 2 tablespoons vegetable oil over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add carrot, onion, garlic, sage, and a generous pinch of salt and cook, stirring, until vegetables are just tender. Add sweet potatoes and stock and bring to a simmer. Cook for 10 minutes until vegetables are very tender. Discard sage, if using. Add orange juice. Blend soup until smooth. Season with salt. In a mixing bowl, stir together pistachios, orange zest, scallions, mint, and cayenne pepper. Fold in olive oil and season with salt. Serve soup, spooning pistachio salsa on top.

PATIENT SUCCESS SPOTLIGHT

THE HOLIDAYS WITH THE CHAVEZ FAMILY While dad was helping injured patients at work, the Chavez family went to visit Santa. We hope everyone enjoyed the holidays!

“BioSport Physical Therapy was a great experience for me. The staff was very friendly, helpful and provided a very comfortable environment. My primary physical therapist, Leo, and his staff were very perceptive and knowledgeable not only in their assessment and treatment of my condition but also provided me with a clear understanding of how I should focus my lifestyle to stay healthy in the long run. Best of all, they were able to completely eliminate my pain, where originally I thought I would need surgery! I am very grateful to Leo and his staff for getting me pain free and back to normal.” – John D. They were able to completely eliminate my pain, where originally I thought I would need surgery!

1. Strive for purpose in your daily activities. Be purposeful in everything you do. Walk with purpose and people are more likely to respect your time. 2. Resolve not to be mediocre, even in how you eat. Use the freshness of the new year as an excuse for avoiding mediocrity. This can be a challenging task because industry markets products and services to the lowest common denominator. Give yourself an upgrade. Resolve to distance yourself from average. 3. Schedule exercise and stretching. Exercise is more effective when it is regular and systematic. It can be difficult to schedule exercise unless time is pre-committed. If you need help with exercise or if you have pain that is holding you back. Contact us at BioSport Physical Therapy and we can help you meet this resolution.

5HEALTH TIPS FOR THENEWYEAR Learn How ToMaintain Your Diet This Year

1. Shop Well For Yourself It is more important then ever to stock your kitchen with healthy foods. Have healthy snacks handy. The more convenient they are, the more likely you are to eat them. Instead of thinking about what you shouldn’t eat, promise to eat your 3 to 5 servings of vegetables each day. 2. Schedule Your Exercise Your schedule will be very hectic this year, like every year. Schedule your workouts just as you would any other appointment. It’s okay if you can’t make it to class, but make sure that you get some activity in at least three days per week. 3. Just Say No You probably aren’t aware how much extra food you consume just from people offering it to you. A sample at the market here, an extra cookie at

an office party there and it all adds up. Just think twice before you take that food and decide if you really want it. 4. Skip the Baking Do you make baked goods for giving? Chances are you eat much of what you bake. Who wouldn’t? Instead make non-food gifts, or prepare ingredients for baked goods and put them in pretty jars — this year, let your gift recipient bake it up. That way, they can eat it when they want it and you don’t have to be tempted in the kitchen. 5. Hydrate Keep your water bottle with you at all times. You should be drinking eight, 8-ounce glasses of water each day. One handy trick is to buy a 64 ounce water jug. Fill it up in the morning and know that you need to finish it by the end of the day.
