Recreation Expansion - Proposal

2.) DETAILED PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Recreation Expansion Project will be located at the (southeast) corner of North Wildcat Way and E. 18 th Avenue. The proposed building site itself, broadly within the red square below, now is undeveloped, with the exception of a university parking lot, the capacity of which will be replaced at another location. The site is bordered on the north by student housing.

The space will be managed by the Recreation Department in close consultation with CWU Athletics to serve a variety of student recreation needs: academic, recreation and intramural programs; club sports; and Athletic programs, especially the intercollegiate athletic track & field program. The project’s size and complexity are limited to the funding available, and therefore the project committee has carefully articulated priorities in order to be accountable to students’ needs. Following are project components in priority order: Priority A 1. Development of a track & field facility to be used competitively by CWU Athletics as well as campus recreation: a 400-meter, all-weather track that meets all NCAA competition specifications to accommodate all running events and multi-directional runways for jump events, i.e., high jump, pole vault, long jump, and triple jump; and a throws venue to accommodate the field events of javelin, shot put, hammer throw, and discus. Artificial/synthetic turf field on the interior of the track to accommodate intramural sports: there are a number of artificial/synthetic turf systems and manufacturers in today’s marketplace, most of which use a synthetic fiber and infill mixtures consisting of sand and
