Ottawa’s lack of ambulances and para- medics is taking its toll on the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR). Paramedic response times in the UCPR have been on the rise since 2015 when the population was under 90,000. That year, the average response time for the highest priority calls was under eight minutes. In 2022, the most recent year with available data, response times were averaging more than 11 minutes for a population of under 97,000. Response time targets are measured on six categories of patient. They include five levels of the Canadian Triage Accuity Scale (CTAS) ranging from level five, which is consi- dered non-urgent, to level 1, a question of life or death. The sixth category is for sudden cardiac arrest. The UCPR response time target for CTAS 1 is eight minutes, CTAS 2 to 5 is 16 minutes, and the target for sudden cardiac arrest calls is six minutes. Since 2021, paramedics planned to hit their target numbers for CTAS 1 calls 48 per cent of the time, CTAS 2 calls 90 per cent of the time, CTAS 3 to 5 70 per cent of the time, and sudden cardiac arrest calls 40 per cent of the time. (In 2021, the planned percentage for CTAS 3 to 5 calls was adjusted down from 90 per cent, a target they failed to hit every year since 2015.) 8IJMF6$13TQBSBNFEJDTIJUUIFJSUBSHFU for CTAS 3 and 4 in 2022, they fell short in every other category, missing their target number by 10 per cent on the most urgent calls (38 per cent), 12 per cent on the second most urgent (78 per cent), and four per cent on sudden cardiac arrest calls (36 per cent). CTAS 5 target times, the least urgent calls, were just one per cent short of planned performance in the region. Ottawa to blame? According to Marc-André Périard, UCPR %JSFDUPSPG&NFSHFODZ4FSWJDFT UIFQSPCMFN EPFTOUOFDFTTBSJMZMJFXJUIJOUIFDPVOUJFT CVU is in sending reinforcements to neighbouring municipalities, like Ottawa, who are in a much more dire situation. In 2022, there were more than 1,800 reported level zeroes in Ottawa, the code used for when there are no ambulances available to respond to emergency calls. A Hawkesbury and District General Hospi- tal (HGH) initiative calling in a primary care paramedic (PCP) when two or more ambu- lances are expecting to wait two or more hours is helping reduce some of the time QBSBNFEJDTBSFTUVDLJOUIF&%QBSLJOHMPU The PCP can look after up to four patients in the ambulance bay, allowing paramedics to carry on responding to calls. Lors du dévoilement de la nouvelle expo- sition de la galerie CAPRAC au YMCA de Rockland, le 4 juillet dernier, une œuvre d’art a été offerte à M. Gilles Chartrand en guise de remerciement pour ses 9 ans de fidèle service au Conseil Des arts de Prescott-Russell (CAPRAC); mandat d’années consécutives maxi- males en tant que membre du conseil d’administration. Le CAPRAC est un organisme à non-but lu- cratif géré par un conseil d’administration de bénévoles dévoués par la cause artistique. Il a pour mission d’informer la collectivité des diverses manifestations culturelles, artistiques et patrimoniales de Prescott- Russell. En effet c’est une vitrine culturelle qui dessert toutes sortes d’artistes de la communauté. Cette initiative n’aurait pas vu le jour sans le travail et la générosité des bénévoles. En plus d’avoir été vice-président au DPVSTEFQMVTJFVSTBOOÊFT .$IBSUSBOE s’est dédié bénévolement depuis les débuts du CAPRAC, qui fêtera 10 ans en 2024. The Remix Dance Academy proved domi- nant at the 2023 World Cup of Dance competition in Whistler, B.C. with three teams placing first and three placing second in their respective categories. Since 2008, the Dance World Cup, has hosted dance teams from as far as New Zealand and everywhere in between. This year for its 13th edition, thousands of dancers were invited to participate from every continent, including six teams from Rockland’s own Remix Dance Academy. The teams EVOLUTION, WEST CREW and POMD placed first and Thrive, Next Generation and Ari placed second. “This is an outstanding result for our community.” said Bonnie West, dance director at Remix Dance. This community is now recognized on the national stage as a premiere dance locale, thanks to the Remix Dancers. Our teams have worked hard, and it is so exciting to see the talent and pride our community can take in our youth.” The dance academy also held its 21st annual Hip Hop Dance show, showcasing the talent of the region’s dancers at the Salle Optimiste in Rockland. More than 40 groups performed, and more than 600 dedicated fans, friends and family were in attendance for the two shows. “These teams are made up of dynamic young women and men from throughout our local communities,” said West. “They are something to see.” As the 2023 season comes to an end, West and the crew are ready for a well-de- served break. Not a long one, however, as auditions for next season start in the fall. Registration is open.
