The Harder I Work, The Luckier I Get

I’m no different than you when it comes to blaming my parents for some of the things I do or don’t do. The irony is that my kids, Carson and Clare, now say the same things about Claudia and me that I’ve been known to say about my folks and their parenting. Here’s the good news: I’m not there yet, but I’m very close to focusing on only the good things my mom and dad taught me over the years to make me the man I am today.

“Come on, Dad,” I would say. “They’re big time, and somewhere, they landed a big break.” My dad would remind me, “The harder you work, the luckier you will get.” The saying proved true. I always managed to get a job or an interview by working hard, which leads to the luck part. On Father’s Day, I think it can be easy to point out the things our dads didn’t do for us while we were growing up. Instead, we should focus on all the good things our dads did teach us. I had a chance to work with Tony Robbins three years ago. He said, “If you are going to blame your parents for all the bad things in your life, you had better blame them for all the good things in your life too.” Wow, what a lesson from Tony! At that moment, I picked up the phone, called my dad, and told him I loved him. I challenge you men to do the same thing. Ladies are welcome to join; however, it’s us guys who usually struggle with telling our dads the “I love you” part. When I left ABC in Boise as a sports anchor, I was blessed to work for Fox Sports during the Masters Tournament. One of the producers on the show was helping me do research on the golfers. I was comparing Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and David Duval to Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player. New versus old. The producer shouts to me, “Dave, here’s a quote from Gary Player after he won the Masters in 1974: ‘The harder I work, the luckier I get.’” My lede that night simply read, “In the words of my dad, David, and golfer Gary Player, ‘The harder you work, the luckier you get.’ Those words could never be more true than they were today on the greens at Augusta.” Happy Father’s Day, Dad. We’re still working hard and feeling incredibly blessed! -Dave Tester

“The harder I work, the luckier I get. ” My dad didn’t coin that phrase, but as far as I was concerned as a kid, he did. Growing

up on a small farm in northern Idaho, my dad always encouraged me to follow my passion. His passion was veterinary medicine. Mine was sports broadcasting. We listened to the radio while we worked with cows and horses in the barn. When listening to Seattle Mariners and Idaho Vandals games on the radio, I always wondered if, someday, I could do that. My dad would always tell me, “You can. Get in the right place at the right time, and you can make it happen.”

“THE GO-GIVER” BY BOB BURG

“Most people just laugh when they hear that the secret to success is giving … Then again, most people are nowhere near as successful as they wish they were.” Bob spent time with me reminding me of the importance of doing little things that mean a lot. Remember, it’s not what you say; it’s how you make them feel.

The Go-Giver tells the story of an ambitious young man named Joe who

“THE LITTLE RED BOOK OF SELLING” BY JEFFREY GITOMER

yearns for success. Joe is a true go-getter, though he sometimes feels as if the harder and faster he works, the further away his goals seem to be. Joe learns that changing his focus from getting to giving — putting others’ interests first and continually adding value to their lives — ultimately leads to unexpected returns.

Jeffrey was kind enough to spend time with me in Atlanta to sharpen my sales skills.

I highly recommend this book to any new salespeople or folks looking to get out of a rut, especially those who hate to read. “The Little Red Book of Selling” is short, sweet, and packed with the answers people are searching for to help them make sales for the moment and for the rest of their lives.

P.S. The best sales advice Jeffrey ever gave me is: KICK YOUR OWN ASS, Dave!

“The other day, I was trying to get ahold of a math teacher with no luck. I finally called the front office and had them ‘page him.’ They were a little taken aback but did it, and I did have a good visit with him. Your techniques still help me accomplish things every day, even if I don’t work in sales.”

3 Strategies for Genuine Community Involvement Make a Positive Impact

Even if most of your clients are located in other parts of the globe, the place your business calls home is a huge part of your identity. When a company makes a point to get involved locally, it’s doing more than making new connections and getting its brand out there — it’s also making a positive impact on the place it calls home. Most companies experience a slowdown in the summer. Here are some strategies to take advantage of that lull and create a plan for your business to get involved in the community and be a good neighbor. SUPPORT A LOCAL CHARITY Every town boasts its share of charities and nonprofits looking to make a difference. Find a cause you believe in, then help out. This could mean donating a portion of your revenue to a local women’s shelter, volunteering as a company at the soup kitchen, or sponsoring a gala that raises money for a children’s hospital. Supporting charities demonstrates your values and attracts the kinds of customers who share them. JOIN A PARADE This sounds unconventional, but sometimes it pays to think outside the box. Most towns put on a Fourth of July parade in the summer, so why

not join in? Building a float could be a great team-building exercise, and a lot of people will turn up and see your mobile advertisement in the parade. Being in the parade shows that you’re part of the community, and when you top it all off by tossing candy to the kids, you’ll really make an impact. WORK WITH LOCAL SCHOOLS Your company could donate school supplies or even sponsor a program. Art and music programs are often the first to suffer from budget cuts, so support from a local business could make a huge difference. Donate art supplies to the classroom, sponsor high school theater productions, or offer scholarships to help young musicians pay for new instruments. Keep the arts alive by helping the kids in your community do what they love. These suggestions require time and resources to pull off, but making the effort can transform your company from just another business in a sea of many to a pillar in your community.

Take a Deep Breath

AN ANCIENT SOLUTION TO MODERN PROBLEMS The Truth About Meditation

Close your eyes and take a deep breath.

This is the first step in every meditation session. Though often associated with the New Age metaphysical movement, meditation isn’t all about incense and healing crystals. Meditation is an ancient practice that strengthens your mental

HOW DO I MEDITATE? Meditating is as simple as sitting in a quiet place, closing your eyes, and focusing on your breathing for a few minutes. Whenever your mind starts to wander, gently bring it back to your breath. You don’t need to climb a mountain or pay for a week-long retreat to start meditating.

focus, and recent research suggests that it offers real solutions to modern problems.

WHAT IS MEDITATION? Meditation has strong roots in various religious and cultural traditions, but anyone can find value in practicing it. The purpose of meditation is to strengthen your mind by promoting mindfulness, focus, and awareness.

That said, there are plenty of resources that help beginners build a strong foundation for

meditation. Popular apps like Calm or Headspace are available on any smartphone and offer guided courses you can start anywhere, anytime. You could also check online or at your local community center for group classes if you would like some in-person guidance. Meditation isn’t a magical ritual that will cure all that ails you, but plenty of research suggests meditation does provide tangible benefits to our mental and physical well-being. Maybe one day, meditation will be as commonplace as daily exercise.

DOES MEDITATION WORK? It depends on what you mean by “work.” Will meditation allow you to defy gravity and hover above the earth? Probably not. But there are so many benefits that will leave you feeling lighter in another way. A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that mindful meditation lowers stress levels, and patients who habitually
