Skip the List of Resolutions WRITE DOWN YOUR DESIRES INSTEAD

page. It doesn’t have to be anything grand or complicated, although it certainly can be if you’d like. It can be the desire for a clean car, a new job, or winning the lottery. Whatever it is, write a new one down every single day.

we write down. But on the flip side, we don’t usually get the things we never ask for. The main idea behind this practice is to be intentional. When people stick with this daily ritual, they start to feel their lists manifest in optimism. That’s because the act of writing it down leads to a stronger belief in the possibility that it could happen. Even though you shouldn’t approach the practice with a theme in mind, you’ll likely discover that a theme starts to develop on its own. It could show a desire to better yourself physically, a need to make your life more organized, or the realization that you want to spend more time with family. All these day-to-day desires start pointing to factors that help you realize what’s most important to you. That means you can start taking real steps toward leading the life you’ve always wanted. There’s a lot of power in making that discovery about yourself, and that’s why this is such a great practice to start in the new year. I know I’ll be writing all about how I’d love to get back to Hawaii one day and find a way to tackle all my emails. So whatever your desires may be, I encourage you to start realizing them as we head into 2020.

This practice has been one of the highlights to emerge from my new

program called Inspiring Women . Although it’s a group geared toward women, men are, of course, also invited. The idea behind this program is that women face many challenges differently than men do. Women already view money differently and have to plan for retirement differently because statistics tell us that, overall, women live longer than men. This means that 80% of men die married, while 80% of women die single. So, women who are living a single life again have to figure out what becoming financially independent means for them. They have to discover the tools they need and instill a new mindset to go along with those tools to make their new life work. We cover a lot in Inspiring Women , but this practice of writing down one thing you want every day is doable and helpful for anyone. Sure, there’s no guarantee we’ll ever acquire or achieve any of the things

It’s January, and we all know what that means: Resolutions are aplenty! While I have nothing against creating resolutions — especially if you’ve found them to be a useful tactic for getting things done — my own experiences show that attempts at hard-and-fast resolutions seem to dwindle long before we’re able to figure out how to achieve them. So instead, I’ve started the tradition of simply writing down one thing I want every single day. It’s an easy yet effective process. Pick an item you can write in and carry with you everywhere you go: a notebook, your phone, or even a pad of sticky notes. Every day when inspiration strikes, write down a single thing you want on a fresh

Meet Keith Brand

HE’LL HELP YOU SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since this past November, Keith Brand has been helping the team at Retirement Planning Strategies figure out what clients want in the short term and plan for what’s best in the long term. These are strategies we’ve wanted to revitalize for a long time, so when Keith was also looking to breathe some novelty into his life, it was like the stars aligned. After working as a private client consultant for a large corporate firm for 20 years, Keith was ready for a change and really

Keith has always wanted to help people plan and manage their assets, but his passion for working to see the bigger picture sparked during the market crash of 2008. “I really saw the need to help people stay disciplined with long-term financial plans instead of just concerning themselves with the short term,” Keith says. “That’s when I became a certified financial planner because I wanted to help the people behind the portfolio, not just the portfolio itself.” This holistic approach is exactly the mindset we try to instill in all our clients, and Keith’s embodiment of it is already leading to smarter decisions for many. As a man who understands the importance of the bigger picture, Keith spends much of his time outside of work focusing on family. Each of his three kids is in their teens and pursuing their own interests and passions, and Keith is there to support them every step of the way, whether it involves volleyball, marching band, or church activities. After achieving his dream of building a home from the ground up, Keith is now turning his eye to restoring an old Mustang, something he’s also accomplished in the past. Apparently when you’ve got an eye for the endgame, there’s a lot you can achieve. That’s why we’re so thrilled to have Keith on our team.

grabbed the bull by the horns. He quit his job of two decades, built a brand-new home, and got married, all in the year before starting his first day with Retirement Planning Strategies as our newest client services specialist. “My previous job had become flooded with dreaded corporate vibes,” Keith says. “There wasn’t much room for my voice to be heard, which meant I wasn’t being given the opportunity to provide my clients with the services they deserved.”

TAGLINE Tips for National Clean Up Your Computer Month

Everyone relies on technology. Computers, laptops, tablets, and phones are staples of modern life. However, it’s easy for these devices to become cluttered with old photos, files, and general disorganization. Luckily, January is National Clean Up Your Computer Month and an excellent time to get your technology in order. START BY DUSTING Over time, computer towers can become clogged with dust, which creates additional, unwanted heat within your computer. Regular cleanings will increase the lifespan of your computer and protect its essential components. Compressed air is great for removing most of the dust and other particulates. If the fans or filters are too dirty, you can remove them from the tower to clean them better. If you use water or liquid cleaning products on them, be sure they are completely dry before placing them back into your computer. ORGANIZE YOUR FILES Naming and arranging the files on your computer in such a way that they’re easy for you to find can end up saving you a lot of time.

Declutter your workspace by creating one file for pictures, one for Word documents, one for spreadsheets, and one for programs to eliminate the hassle of frantically searching for the files you need. BACK UP YOUR COMPUTER Be sure to back up your computer before you start deleting things. This acts as a safety net in case you delete something you didn’t mean to. Additionally, consider installing a second hard drive. The extra space can help with storing important files without having to worry about how much room is left. CLEAN UP SPACE Any files you’ll never use again should be deleted. Likewise, any programs you haven’t used in a while should be uninstalled. Check your hard drive for files that might be taking up unintended space on your computer. And remember to empty the recycling bin — it’s easy to forget just how much goes in there.

Stay Active During Your Golden Years

your years in the workforce. Alternatively, if you want to help younger students with their academics, you could work as a tutor or a teacher’s assistant at a local school. SHARE YOUR PASSION FOR SPORTS AS A COACH. Coaching can be a satisfying way to spend your retirement and support younger athletes. However, there are a few things to keep in mind if you want to be a coach. You might need to pass a background check, and you’ll probably need to know first aid as well. While the pay isn’t incredible, the time you’ll spend sharing your passion for sports with young people is more than worth it. GIVE BACK AS A PERSONAL CARE AIDE. If you’re looking for an opportunity to stay active and have a more direct impact on people’s lives, you can try being a personal care aide. Personal care aides help elderly and disabled people with everyday tasks, such as shopping, doing laundry, and bathing. Many people who require this assistance prefer older aides who can empathize with their struggles, so it’s a great job for recent retirees. Just because you’ve retired doesn’t mean you can no longer bring value to your community. With all the time you have on your hands, you could become one of your town’s most valuable assets. 3 PART-TIME JOBS FOR RETIREES

Whether you want to generate some extra income during your retirement or just keep yourself busy, getting a part-time job can be a great way to spend your golden years. But why settle for just any opportunity when you could stay mentally and physically active and give back to the community? If that sounds like your ideal way to spend retirement, here are a few options to consider. PASS ALONG YOUR KNOWLEDGE AS A TEACHER. Many community colleges and community centers offer part-time teaching opportunities for those who want to share their field of expertise with others. Many of these positions don’t require a teaching degree or certificate — just a wealth of knowledge from

Real Winter Wonderlands PAGE 4

ESCAPE TO A WINTER WONDERLAND Snow is magical and gorgeous — unless you have to commute in it. If you want to enjoy all the wonder that winter has to offer without the hassle, why not turn it into a vacation? Here are a few breathtaking, snow-covered destinations that any winter lover can enjoy. BULGUKSA TEMPLE, SOUTH KOREA Above the city of Gyeongju, this ancient Buddhist temple has stood on the slopes of Tohamsan Mountain since the eighth century. Bulguksa, or “Temple of the Buddha Land,” is South Korea’s No. 1 UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it a popular attraction for domestic and international tourism. The crowds and school tours die down during the winter, however, which also happens to be when Bulguksa is at its most pristine. The iced- over lotus ponds and snow-dusted pagodas add to the sense of tranquility this site naturally exudes. THE ANTARCTIC This is the one entry on this list that is best enjoyed during the summer months, which is December–February in the Southern Hemisphere, because that’s when the freezing temperatures of the southernmost continent are at their most hospitable. The Antarctic has become an increasingly popular tourist destination, with cruises taking adventure seekers through the vast, untouched beauty of this far-flung destination. Some tourists even enjoy kayaking or cross- country skiing through this icy paradise.
