What is the most important consideration when you first start creating an artwork? The most important thing is to capture the moment daily; I believe continuity matters, and the meaning of the paintings relies on that continuity and seeing the works together over time. The result is not always the same as you expect. I think that’s the beauty of art, that what you set out to create might not be the thing you end up with. Tell me about the sources of inspiration, techniques, equipment, materials, formats and conceptual approaches of your artworks. One of my essential approaches is to physically try whatever idea comes into my brain instead of pre-judging it before I make the effort. I am an individual artist; I don’t have a big production. If I need a stainless steel sheet to depict an event, I take an Uber to Home Depot and see the material. If I need fake snow, I run to the toy store. Brooklyn is perfect because you can run to get material anywhere. What role does the medium of painting play in your practice? When did you first start making art and how did you learn to paint? Learning by doing has been my method since the beginning. After being inspired by On Kawara’s Today series in 2016, I went to Blick, the art supply store, and bought some enamel paints and brushes. Later, I started painting every day after work. Maybe I spent two to three hours daily. I still don’t know how to use a tool or paints properly. I am always learning and making things up.
Q&A with Sho Shibuya, Artist
You were born in 1984 in Fukuoka. Tell me about your upbringing and when you knew you wanted to be an artist. I was born in Fukuoka City, in the southwestern part of Japan. Until recently, I thought I was the only artist in my family, but I found out my grandfather worked as a dyer for traditional Japanese clothes such as kimonos. My background is in graphic design, and becoming an artist was not planned. I started painting in 2016 after feeling inspired by On Kawara’s Today series. I painted small pieces daily after work, which led to my first exhibition at a gallery in New York. Even after my first show, I believed I was living as a graphic designer, and I started my design company in 2018. Life as a designer was very satisfying, but after I began the Sunrise series on The New York Times covers, I felt I should dedicate my time to this. It creates more meaning in my life. How did you go from learning architecture and interior design at a vocational school in Tokyo to graphic design? My good friend, who was at another design school, shared an Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop account with me. That opened my curiosity, and I was deeply into it. I designed a poster for my parents, birthday stickers for my friends, and t-shirts, and they were happy. That was the first time in my life that I made people happy with something I created. That feeling was the trigger to become a graphic designer.
DEVASTATION, 12 August 2023. The Hawaiian town of Lahaina, on the island of Maui, was completely devastated by wildfires, and the death toll has reached 93 people, the deadliest blaze in the United States in over a decade. The fires were made worse due to dry conditions, high temperatures, and strong wind, all made more common by climate change. Image courtesy of the artist
