having to stop, as long as my speed was under 50 km/h. Priced at EUR288,356 with options, the car was painted in bespoke Apple Green. Although it was impossible to go unnoticed in this vibrant hue, it easily matched the blossoming grape vines lining the roads along the way. Sitting inside a Bentley is like being enveloped in a glove of pure luxury – there’s no other feeling that comes close. Every detail counts. The hand-picked leather in burnt oak, stitched with the brand’s signature Diamond-in-Diamond quilting pattern and wellness quilted upholstered seats, comes from northern Europe to ensure that the herds grazing high above sea level are free of insect bites that would otherwise leave blemishes on their hides. A large, long car with heavy doors, I almost feel as if I’m sailing on a grand yacht. The dashboard, centre console, glove box and door trim are adorned with American black walnut veneers showcasing the crown cut, which is created by flat slicing the tree trunk to obtain a crown shape in the wood grain. The open pore finishing process allows the natural texture of the wood to be felt, which I can’t help but want to touch.

The second-generation Continental GT was unveiled in 2010, and now, five years into its third generation, it is Bentley’s second most popular model globally, behind the Bentayga SUV. Featuring a new platform, engine, suspension, electrical architecture, technology, interior and exterior designs, it set a new benchmark for the now highly-competitive luxury GT sector. Almost one in every three Bentleys sold today is a Continental GT or GT Convertible, and close to 5,000 units of the two product lines were produced in 2022, with the 100,000 th car due in early 2025. Thanks to impressive profits and a strong demand outlook, Bentley’s Beyond100 strategy aims to invest EUR3 billion in the Crewe factory and five new BEV launches in five years starting in 2026 in order to electrify its entire product range and achieve carbon neutral status by 2030. Now Bentley is retiring its W12 petrol engine for good. Why would the company cease production in 2024 of an iconic motor so closely intertwined with the success of its Continental in favour of the slower and less powerful 542 bhp, 4.0-litre V8? It’s a strategic company-wide decision to become more fuel efficient, reduce CO2 emissions to 0 g/km and become the leader in sustainable luxury mobility. Capable of going from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds with a top speed of 318 km/h, the engine still roars with power nonetheless, as I got to learn first hand when taking a Continental GTC Azure V8 for a spin on the French Riviera. There’s nothing quite like driving with the top down along the sunny Mediterranean coast in a car that oozes quiet elegance. And when the weather began to change, I could raise the roof with the press of a button without
