Are the challenges different in the Middle East? The Middle East represents a challenging environment for archivists. Preserving cultural legacy, adapting to digital environments, countering false information, and protecting data privacy are some of the difficulties encountered by archivists in the region. Strategic solutions are a prerequisite to strike an ideal balance between access and privacy linguistic diversity, and resource constraints. This further necessitates robust cooperation and networking, manoeuvring political constraints, and steadfast dedication to conserving history, all while taking into account the modern dynamics. In your former role as Director General of the UAE National Library & Archives, you led the digitisation efforts of millions of records relating to the Arabian Gulf region. Now, the advent of AI promises to revolutionise digital archiving. How do you see this technology supporting the archival profession? The transformations brought on by various advanced technologies, especially artificial intelligence [AI], is enormous. AI has made significant impacts, revolutionising industries across the spectrum. This technology offers various use cases and innumerable benefits in the archives sector. One of the primary benefits of AI in digital archiving is its capacity to accelerate cataloguing and metadata enrichment.

Traditional methods of manually categorising and tagging records can be time-consuming and prone to human errors. However, AI-powered algorithms can swiftly analyse and categorise large volumes of records based on patterns and content, ensuring efficient and accurate cataloguing. This not only saves time but also enhances the organisation and accessibility of archival materials. Moreover, AI can play a pivotal role in content analysis. The ability of AI systems to recognise patterns, extract information, and identify relevant content within documents can streamline the analysis of historical records. This feature is valuable when dealing with vast collections, as it enables archivists to quickly pinpoint relevant information and derive insights without having to manually sift through each document. The ease of accessing historical data is another area, where AI can make a significant impact. Through techniques like natural language processing, AI can facilitate intuitive and user-friendly search functionalities. Researchers, historians, and the general public can interact with archival materials using natural language queries, making historical data more accessible to a wider audience.
