range of participants. This could lead to greater involvement in preserving our digital history and cultural heritage. Speaking about the “Sustainable Knowledge, Sustainable Planet: Archives, Records and Climate Change” theme, which is a rarely discussed topic in the archival practice, in what way do you see climate change intersecting with archives? The theme ‘Sustainable Knowledge, Sustainable Planet: Archives, Records and Climate Change’ shed light on an issue that is often overlooked in the archival discourse – the impact of climate change on archives. Increasing sea levels and severe weather conditions pose significant challenges for archival preservation, putting the physical preservation of historical materials in jeopardy and necessitating novel protection measures. In addition, archives themselves provide priceless records of the impact of climate change, enhancing their significance in recording our changing environmental narrative. This theme also coincides with the UAE hosting the COP28, one of the most important events on global climate action agenda. Archiving methods have significantly evolved over the years, from ancient clay tablets and paper scrolls to smart,

AI-assisted cloud archiving software. How do you see the future of archiving? Numerous cutting-edge technologies are set to transform and reshape the future of the global archiving sector, opening doors to countless opportunities. As I previously mentioned, the integration of AI and machine learning into archiving processes is set to play a pivotal role in this evolution. By leveraging the capabilities of AI, various aspects of archiving will become more efficient and streamlined. In the past, indexing a document manually would take half an hour. Today, AI has the capability to index in seconds by customising your archives with complete ease. It will automatically archive the content you want, catalogue, and index it. We are in the era of speed, and it’s also important for decision makers to have the information they need to decide very fast. It is widely believed among other industries that AI will lead to a loss of jobs, but in our industry, we don’t have enough archivists. Therefore, for us, it will be good to have a technology that supports our human resources. We are already creating new programmes for high-school graduates so they can find archiving jobs easily. However, there aren’t many archivists around the world, and it takes time to have skilled archivists. By combining technology with human capabilities, this will help archivists in everything from productivity of indexing and cataloguing to preservation and restoration. Furthermore, cloud-based technologies and platforms will foster global collaboration and enhance access to numerous vast record repositories. Similarly, blockchain technology, known for its secure and immutable nature, is expected to make digital archives more trustworthy. By ensuring tamper- proof authenticity and provenance of archived materials, blockchain will boost confidence in the integrity of digital
