The Archives Department performs all jobs related to paper and electronic archives. Moreover, it is involved with all government organisations covered by Federal Law No 7 of 2008, otherwise known as the National Library & Archives Law. We are responsible for overseeing the government records organisation, training and consultation, transfer of all historical paper and electronic material generated by all government offices, as well as reception, registry, processing, cataloguing, scanning, restoring and enabling access. In addition to my strategic and managerial duties as director and my contribution to the institution’s growth, my role as director also includes managing the department’s day-to- day operations, developing strategic plans and overseeing their implementation, controlling the department’s budget, supervising new acquisitions, managing staff, in addition to maintaining relationships with foreign archives where we conduct research. Could you share with us some of the latest exciting developments at the UAE National Library and Archives? We have been focusing primarily on the ICA Congress where we succeeded at creating a remarkable experience for all those involved. However, there have been exciting developments which we are particularly proud of. One which I have already mentioned is the setting up of academic courses at Abu Dhabi’s Sorbonne University. Many of the graduates who take up positions at the UAE National Library and Archives and in the federal, local and private institutions, we hope, will form the backbone of our staff in years to come. Another recent development is our Arabian Gulf Digital Archive – a website accessible by researchers and the public.

This is in line with our determination to make the UAE’s and the regions’ history accessible to all. There are hundreds of thousands of pages and photographs available on that site, www.agda.ae, that we hope will become a lasting reference tool to provide everyone with an insight, particularly into the history of the UAE, and the amazing path taken by the rulers of the Emirates that has made the UAE such a notable country around in the world. Last but not the least, we have implemented a unique project for the long-term preservation of the digital contents - the new technology from Piql, which will preserve digital content for more than 2,000 years. It is important to mention here that the National Library and Archives is the sole provider of this service to the UAE and the Middle East, and we welcome any archives in the region who want to use this facility. Finally, what would be an issue that you would like to leave in the minds of readers? We need to think about the future of our history. It may a contradictory statement, but what would be the future of our history if we don't preserve our current records? Everyone, in every field and industry, is dealing with data and generating data. We need to think about the future we would like to see, or that we would like our children to see. How it will look like will depend on us. So, we need to think together about how we will improve this field and make sure that we are preserving our documentary heritage for future generations. .
