UAE has declared several national initiatives to help address climate change, including plans to reduce emissions by 19 per cent of absolute emission reduction by 2030 from 2019 baseline levels, and has drafted the National Climate Change Plan of the UAE 2017–2050 based on three pillars: managing emissions while maintaining economic growth; reinforcing capacities to adapt to climate change and reduce risks; and driving the UAE’s economic diversification agenda through innovative solutions. The UAE aims to implement several plans, which include: increasing the contribution of clean energy; improving production and supply management efficiency; developing carbon capture and storage systems; supporting agricultural innovation to protect the environment, and leading hydrogen production to support local low-carbon industries. The UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, in October of 2021 at Expo 2020 crowns a series of successes achieved by the country in its local and international efforts to address climate change. The UAE is the first country in the Middle East and North Africa – and the first oil-producing country – to announce such an initiative. In July of this year, the UAE pledged to reduce emissions 40 per cent by 2030 compared to a business-as-usual scenario.

ABU DHABI’S ROLE IN COMBATTING CLIMATE CHANGE Abu Dhabi is fully aligned with the UAE government and its Net Zero by 2050 Climate Neutrality Strategic Initiative and is committed to reducing emissions by 22 per cent by 2027 from the 2016 baseline year. Abu Dhabi’s leadership wants to be a global responsible “citizen” and cut down emissions from 2016 levels which were around 135 million tonnes. Currently it is estimated that the current levels are actually less than that, and the trend will be decreasing to 105 million tonnes by 2027. But how does this relate to us at the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi [EAD]? The Agency is aligned with the vision of the UAE leadership and works closely with a variety of stakeholders from both the government and private sector to conserve Abu Dhabi’s environment and combat climate change. In alignment with Abu Dhabi Government’s objectives, climate change mitigation was already one of EAD’s top strategic priorities and was part of its five-year strategy 2021-2025, where the Agency is working towards “securing the resilience of Abu Dhabi through mitigation and adaptation to climate change, and protection of our air and marine water”. To achieve climate neutrality by 2050, EAD’s strategy is to reduce residual GHG emissions in sectors that pose challenges to decarbonisation using natural and artificial carbon sinks, and advance Abu Dhabi’s economic diversification agenda through innovative low-carbon solutions. ABU DHABI CLIMATE CHANGE STRATEGY One of EAD’s most prominent achievements was the recent launch of the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy in July of this year. Reflecting the Emirate’s ambition for effective climate action at various levels, the strategy promotes greater resilience in key sectors and makes adaptation to climate change part and parcel of government entities’ plans. Additionally, it outlines Abu Dhabi’s plan to reduce greenhouse gases [GHG] significantly in line with the country ’ s announced aim of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Likewise, the strategy drives innovation in carbon capture and storage, and identifies actions aimed at economic diversification towards low-carbon sectors.
